My Border Collie, Jake is really a "scaredy cat!" He's really a cool, and smart dog, but he's afraid of everything! If he hears noises outside, like a truck, or tractor or something, he won't even go to the bathroom! I've tried staying out with him, and getting him used to noises, but he just isn't getting any better about it. As a matter of fact, I think he is getting worse. Do I need to call Caeser? Help!

Sorry about the misspelling of the word, but that's how spell check spelled it. ??
Anyway, I have tried taking him outside a lot, and he knows where all the noises are coming from. That doesn't work, but thanks. I think I will talk to some professional people about him, like a trainer or something. Thanks for all your help! I appreciate it.

My friend's rat terrier was skittish...they took her to obedience classes and by the 4th class they had a different dog. Socializing and positive reinforcements are critical to build confidence in that type of dog.

Take your dog to a trainer or enroll him in obedience classes. It wil probably take some time to get hiim adjusted, but you as the owner can learn some cool tips from a trainer that you might not have thought of on your own. Plus, you'll have another bonding experience with your pet. Good luck!

P.S. Cesar's a freak show....

Do you coddle him when he gets scared? Pet him, talk sweet? This will reinforce the behavior, regardless of how much exposure he is getting to the outside world. Just keep trying to expose and socialize. Try not to act as if you are nervous, scared or upset, and reward him when he's not being a scaredy cat (dog!).

The word is "skittish'. Not 'skiddish'. And if he were my dog, I would walk him outside at least once a day, so that he could understand where the sounds are coming from.

I don't know if you can break that. My dog has been skittish since she was a puppy. I take her on walks, play with her, and give her all kinds of love. But, except with me, is untrusting of anybody. My dad moved in with us 2 years ago and she is just now starting to play with him.
