How well-established is Blu-Ray in its market? Do you think it will become the hi-def disc of choice, or THE hi-def format? Or is there any chance it will go the way of Beta video-cassettes?

Many thanks,
C.L.

I would defiantly say that they will continue to be the best. Go out and buy a blu-ray disc player. It will be in good use for a while to come.

It's too early to say either way. Think back to the VHS-BETA battle way back. Beta finally sunk. This is the same thing here. Before trying to figure it out and running to buy one, understand that being an early adopter of any new technology is risky and costly. And when you aren't sure of yourself, I'd wait it out. A lot of factors can go into the decision to wait. First, how many movie titles are available and how many are projected to be available in the next year. Second, do you have a 1080P tv, and if not then do you want to buy one just for the Blu-Ray discs? Right now that's the only way to get the true HD content. Third, Have you seen the Blu-Ray content next to an up-converting dvd player? Although noticable, not a huge difference in picture. Fourth, is it worth the few hundreds of dollars for a player knowing that in six months to a year you can find one(a decent brand name one) for only a couple hundred dollars.
I have been in the industry for years and I am currently a distributor of high end home audio products. I know from experience that this could turn out to be a great format to use and will last a long time, but I have seen many things fade away and create an $800 paper weight for eager early adopters. I think the player is great, but it's surely a risk today. Good luck, and be patient!

Blu-Ray has the support of almost all the movie studios and several of them exclusive. Therefore it has a pretty good shot at becoming the standard. However the alternative standard, called HD-DVD, is Microsoft's bet on the next standard and I do not see them giving in easily. Too early to tell who the winner will be but right now Blu-Ray appears to have the upper hand. Many more Blu-Ray players (mainly because Sony Playstation supports Blu-Ray) are in existence and many more Blu-Ray movies have been sold. Also Blockbuster video announced a few months ago that the next batch of high def videos they offer will be exclusively Blu-Ray based on customer demand. In my opinion, unless the HD-DVD camp makes some significant progress before the holiday season this year, the standards war will be over early next year with Blu-Ray winning.
