Hello Sam, do you have membership to www.ancestry.co.uk, or are you only using www.familysearch.org. If you have ancestry.co.uk you could look to the 1841 census, and then the 1851 census you can track both of them that way, until you manage to find the link to your family. If you want to email me I can have a go at trying to find their roots for you.

With a birthdate of 1830, he would have to be at least a great-grandfather (or even great-great-grandfather). I would start with your grandfather's/grandmother's name (whichever side you're tracing), and follow the links back and sooner or later you will hit on the right one. I had a similar problem tracing my Mom's family. Her family name dates back to about the 11th century in England, but I am stuck in the 17th century because I don't know who was related to whom. =[ If you want to send me your grandparents' last names, I'll see what I can do.

Find him on the census - your library or LDS Family History Center may have free access. Look for siblings.

If he was an only child whose parents died young, you would have to delve into wills. If you get lucky, one or both parents may be living with him in 1871, 1881 or 1891. If he has a brother living with him as an adult, and that brother has the same parents as one or the other of the men you found, you've done it.
