My cat goes absolutely nuts when I shine a flashlight on the wall; she always has. She also loves it when I shine a laser pointer on the wall. And she gets a little nutty when she sees the reflection of a DVD on the ceiling.
I have called it the flashlight game since I learned this makes her crazy. I have two questions: Why does this drive her crazy and does anyone else have a cat (or dog, I suppose) who goes bonkers when s/he sees a flashlight shined on a wall?

Basically, what I wonder is if there is something about the light reflected on the wall that drives the cats crazy or if she sees it as prey.

A lot of cats love to play with the beam of a light refected on the wall, floor, or other objects. They get so focused on "catching* that beam of light. I don't know exactly why they love playing with a beam of light so much, since the light is only a one-dimensional object and it doesn't have any scent to it, but for some reason, the cats are interested in running after the beam or watching it.
My last cat loved playing with a beam of light from a flashlight or even with the light reflected off the face of a watch. She would follow it with her eyes and run after it. She loved this type of play for her entire life.
Added: Well, I think the moving light really interests a cat because it's something they want to catch, but they can never truly catch it. It may be similar to a cat seeing a flying insect that they try to catch...it holds their interest until they catch the insect. With the light, they can never quite *catch* it. So maybe chasing a beam of light is like chasing prey in a way.

I do the same game with my cat but with a watch. It makes him go nuts because it's like a mouse they love the chase and fun.

cats go crazy over any light . try to open and close your phone coupla times and see how she gets excited from seein the light goin off and on lol this is actually great if you take videos of her doing all the funny moves trying to catch the lights and turn them into a DVD to watch it later on after several years . my cat got seriously shocked to see himself on tv when i did that .

My cats love both games as well, but especially the laser game. I think it is because they can see the light but can't "catch" it like they can their other toys.

I don't know why they are so drawn to it, probably something to chase like a bug or a mouse. But my cats go wild for it too.

i do have a cat that goes crazy like that i think is it because they see it moving and wonder wat it is so they want to find out so they are going to chase it and try to catch it so they can find out
