Should belonging to a religion make those people better human beings? Or should it only provide some kind of comfort to those who practice it? Should the community and the world benefit from their practice of religion, or should only they benefit?

It should give some explanations (that no religion gives at this point), it should make you a better person, it should bring you a life phylosophy that you would be proud to follow

religion does not accomplish much, but a sincere relationship with Christ does. But we can call this a religion also for the sake of arguement. Christ is mostly about the everlasting life in Heaven, but your life here should try to reflect that of Christ also. Don't look at your self as being better than others, because you are not. Good followers of Christ should be spreading comfort to those around them, but unfortunely most people do not want His comfort, they want the comfort of the world. And some Christians do not follow His commandments to closely, and the world blames Christ as being a false prophet, when in all actually we Christians need to accept our own mistakes and shortcomings. Stop being so prideful. More humble, then the world would benefit!!!

Interesting question. "Should" is a value laden term, since what should or should not be is extremely relative.

If I were to decide: Religion should be individualistic, not a formalized-institutionalized form of thought. Each person would have their own religion with the objective of providing an inner peace only to that individual. As for benefiting the whole of humanity, what would constitute that should be a matter of public debate (without any religious overtones to the debate).

I'm not religious but I do believe in God. Hard to explain but I think having that faith is comforting and helps me get through the day.
I know that when bad and good things happen, they are happening for a reason because it's part of the reason I am here.
If you're a good person, religious or not, your practices and behavior should always been for the good of the community. Constant selfishness will always lead to loneliness.

A relationship with God should give peace (I am into religion). And yes it should make those, with a relationship with God, a better person, loving others unconditionally (not expecting anything in return). If the world don't know you have a relationship with God, You don't.

No matter what people say, if others don't see the goodness and truth in you, its all a lie. i.e. I never tells anyone what I've done for another. Because if I've helped in goodness and truth, they will tell.

It took me a long time to understand the phase, 'it's better to give, than to receive'. I now know that, "you get what you give".

Religion is nothing by itself. It's like have a recipe and never try it.I am christian, but i am not religious.Jesus was not following any kind of religion.Do you know what was his denomination???NONE!Religion doesn't transform anyone. What can transform anyone is repentance and changing of attitude. You only repents if you understand that you are wrong, and this is what Jesus and his biblical principles do.He gave an example and principles to be followed by those that understand His words.

Most people believe in something. Some believe in themselves. Religion gives people a purpose or purposes what it or they mean. If we take the goodness in a religion, then we will show goodness to everyone. If we ourselves interpret all the religious books according to our way of thinking, then it will be chaos, like Bush and his god told him to do so and the Taliban and their allah told them to do so.

Stop trying to justify religion as being only inherently good.

Does religion save more people than it kills?

Well, since the dead people can't answer, we'll never know.

Belonging to a religion does not make you anything but human. Faith in Jesus Christ makes you a saved human.

God Bless
