I have a toy poodle (4 pounds) and he barks a lot when people come over. He is verrrry protective of the house.
When we are outside, go to petsmart or obedience class, he is quiet. The maltese in obedience class is quiet, too.
With a mix, you'll never know the which traits will come from which parent...... however, I would say that poodles are protective and mine will bark if he hears noises outside.
Edit: The size of the malti-poo would vary a lot depending on the parents. I would say anywhere from 4 to 15 pounds.

They're a cross-breed, so you never know. You'd have to look at the size of the parents and guess. The problem with mutts is that you take a gamble by buying one. If you want to know for sure if a dog is too big or too small, get an adult.
I don't know how predisposed to barking Maltese or Poodles are, but a mix of the two breeds could have either tendency or somewhere between. It depends on the dog and you'd need to train it. Any dog will bark a lot if it isn't trained and there's plenty to bark at.

Why not try a bichon or a poodle? Maltipoos are not a registered breed, so you're not going to find any reputable breeders of them. no reputable breeder would breed a teacup-sized dog either, as they are outside the breed standard. I've spoken to many people who said bichons were some of the best dogs to try for people with allergies.

Here's why these designer dogs are a waste of time and money ...
There are three varieties of Poodle: Standard, Miniature and Toy. Cross either of them with a Maltese and you'd get a litter of "Maltipoos". Depending on which Poodle you use, you could get three entirely different Maltipoos.
If you really want a Maltipoo and you can find one for adoption, fine. Otherwise don't waste money on these crap shoot crossbreeds.

If your thinking of getting a maltipoo (mutt) go to a shelter and adopt one. Don't line the pockets of these backyard breeders, breeding anything to make a buck from people that don't know any better. A mutt, is a mutt, is a mutt. Go rescue one!
