Good rule of thumb is to stay away from grocery store food. Look at the label there are tons of by products and corn and wheat and soy., All these things are not good for your dog.

Chicken by products: this is feet, heads, intestines and everything else that you and I will not eat

Corn: this is not digestible in dog or humans it is also the many cause of bald spots called hot spots wheat is also a main allergen.

Try one of these: Royal Caine, Pinnical, Natures Recipe, Natural Choice, wellness, Candie these are just a few really great foods. Talk to your vet but please do not use science diet or Iams!!

Added: I use to feed royal Caine because my vet said it was one of the best but unfortuniatly he did not like it but now he is on Natural Balance Duck and potato and he loves it!! Please look at the lables your self and KEEP your dog on royal caine and do not switch to a crappy grocery store food!! Good for you wanting to feed you dog the best!

Most Purina brand foods (like Dog Chow and Beneful) are owned by the Nestle company...they are all crap in a bag. The only one that is "good enough" to feed a dog is PMI Exclusive, which, while it carries the Purina name (Purina Mills used to be a separate division of Purina before it was sold), is owned by Land O' Lakes Farmland Feeds.

It is a good enough food for dogs, but really, there are better foods out there. Why don't you discuss this with your vet or an expert in animal nutrition to find the right food for your dog? Different dogs have different needs based on breed and lifestyle, and the generic advice you receive online really can't help you make an educated decision.

Purina, Pedigree, Science Diet, Eukenuba, Iams, Good Life, etc. all CRAP. Anything you can buy at a grocery store is crap. Full of fillers and nasty by-products.

Please go to this site and find something that is rated above 3. 6 is the highest rating.

Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul is a good affordable food but maybe you could find something better

Purina is pure unadulterated crap. My dog thrived on Innova large breed puppy, and now eats Innova Evo. It seems a lot more expensive, but dogs only need to eat a fraction of it compared to grocery store brands because there are no fillers (like corn, beet pulp, vegetable fiber , etc).

You have to be very careful that any food you feed your dog is not made by Menu Foods who was involved in the recall. What they seem to have hushed up is that Menu foods also had pets dying because of acetominophen contamination, but they never released the name of the brands that were involved.

Purina Puppy chow and dog chow are nothing but fillers. They provide no quality nutrition to your dog. I unfortunately, used them at one time, and found that my dog was consistently underweight and very puny looking.
When I switched to a high quality food, I saw a healthy weight gain in her...

Purina is terrible. Look on the back of the can/bag and look at the ingredients. I mean, it is okay but there are others that are better.... try using..

Wellness
Solid Gold
Canidae
Eukunaba

Those are very healthy.

I'd get a dog food without grains. Grains are the number 1 cause of allergies, skin issues, re-curring ear infections, etc.

I recommend Evo.

That is the best dog food you can buy in a kibble/canned variety.

Good luck.

I'd stay away from grocery store brands. When I switched over my dog to the high quality ones (we tried Blue Buffalo, but she seemed to like her Natural Choice Lamb&Rice small bites more), but she really enjoyed the Nutro Ultra a lot, so that might be the food we're going to switch her to next.

But since we switched her to high quality food, she has really gained muscle, and I have even had people comment on her coat look shiny and feeling great (she's a boxer mix, short haired, but her fur feels great!).

STAY on royal canin. please.
much much better than purina, although it is more expensive to feed.

once you get down to it, a lot of the premium brands of dog food are really all the same (science diet, nutro, eukanuba, proplan, etc), but royal canin would be at the top.
