I agree with the first answer...the love of God. I'm alive today because of it.

I don't believe it's something one can rationalize. As human beings we just value our lives and the lives of other humans. We're just hard-wired this way IMHO. Tigers and lizards may not feel this way, but we do. This value of life can be overpowered by other things sometimes, like when we go to war or want to kill someone we're angry with, but it's still there underneath. Also, on the rational front, realize that those 7 billion people is a now thing. Humans seem to live and breed pretty easily right now. And given that a human life is relatively short in comparison to the life of the earth for example, it's easy to lose sight of the 3 billion years that no life existed on earth, and the 4 billion years that no humans existed. We may say that humans survive because they're so smart and so adaptable. But I say be careful. That sounds plausible. But if conditions on earth change significantly, we may see a new species dominating the planet. Our big brains are expensive in terms of energy consumption. If food becomes scarce, that big brain may be more of a liability than an asset. If the climate becomse significantly warmer and wetter than it is now, certian bacteria or diseases that just weren't a problem before now become a deadly pandemic. A huge asteroid could hit the earth and wipe everything out. etc.

Life's most precious gift is definitely good health. If the pain is overwhelming enough, all thought of poetry, spirituality, reality, or anything else is thrust into the shadows, as one tries to exist another day, another hour, another moment.
