Deleting or Adding a Name on a Title
When it comes to adding a name to a title, you must jointly apply, in person, at any DMV office for a new title certificate by completing an aptly named Application for Title. Bring proper identification and check, cash, or credit card to pay the $50 fee.

To delete a name, the person exiting the title must sign off. The remaining owner must then bring the title to any DMV office along with proper identification and the $50 fee.

If yours is the only name of the title, you can't. If you own the vehicle jointly with someone else, you can take your name off providing the title is clear and there is no lien holder. If you owe money and are the one named on the note to pay, you can't take your name off without the permission of the finance company with the note. Otherwise, sure, but the remaining person on the title will have to pay $50 if you do.

Who was the "they" that told you this? The DMV has the procedure for doing this. It is just a form of sale where you give up your interest in the property. The new owner will need to get a new title. It is best to get your name off any vehicle that someone else is driving. Until you do that, you are financially and legally responsible for what happens with it.

Sure, you can sign over YOUR INTEREST in the car, to the other person.

You CANNOT "take your name off" if your name is the ONLY name on the title.

And, you have to have the TITLE IN HAND, in order to take your name off of it - so if there's a LOAN on the car, the lender isn't going to give you the title, so you won't be able to take your name off of it until the car is paid off.

If you are listed on a title with another person, and are not a co-guarantor on a loan for the vehicle, you should be able to have your name removed.

Go look at the title, you will see the name of the bank that is financing the vehicle! They will not let you remove your name as you are securing the debt on the loan!

You might check, but if there is a lien on the car, that may have some affect on the ability to sign off. Other than that, I don't see a problem with it. good luck.
