For me number ONE is : All quiet on the western front (1930, not the remake), it is based on a book from some one who really fought in the war (E.M. Remarque)
After that I'll take Saving Private Ryan
These two films show the brutally of war, courage, injustice, cowardice, ...
The fighting scenes are also relatively realistic (no film can show the "real" feeling.
Das Boat, the longest day, a bridge too far, ...

Definetely
Run Silent Run Deep
The Dambusters
A Bridge Too Far
The Longest Day
The Battle of Britain
633 Squadron
Bridge Over The River Kwai
Real films about real war where the enemy were brave enough to stand up and be seen. Not like the sneaking cowardly tactics of the likes of the Vietcong or them bloody cowradly Muslim bastards

For me it has to be the 1963 film The great escape, base on a true story with an all star cast. Watched it a few times now and never get bored.
The bridge over the river Kwai comes a close second.

My personal choice is 'The Deerhunter'.
It gave me an insight into how war might have affected me and the people I grew up with if I had been involved in a war.
I thought it was powerful, scary and stretched the living experience...a bit like war I guess?
PS...Schindlers List was NOT a war film...It just happened to take place during a war! There is a difference!

I love Full Metal Jacket but Saving Private Ryan is awesome the first ten minuets of that film bring home the stark reality of what war can be like brutal.

No romantic comedy is anything like a real relationship and no war movie is anything like war... to think you could convey the grand and unfathomable spectrum of the experince of combat into a movie is sincerely foolish. When you've watched explosions on TV did you ever imagine that the concusion could make you skip a breath and rattle your torso... that the sound of a fighter jet passing by at supersonic speed can make your legs weak or that the sound of an incoming mortor convinces you everytime witout doubt that it's headed to the exact place you stand... Every movie is so far from a real that they're all equally fake saving private ryan is right next to starship troopers in my book.
