A pet store would have to offer me MUCH more than $1000 to take one of their dogs. If you take a dog from a pet store, they SHOULD be paying you...you'll be much more likely to incur outrageous vet bills on one of their dogs (they're usually not very healthy)...like it or not, they are ALL from puppy mills...and those dogs are poorly bred, badly behaved (who can blame them for having psychological issues, considering where they came from?), and were not screened for potential defects.
The only place to get a dog is from a shelter or a good breeder. You often won't be able to get a dog as quickly from one of these places, but you won't regret it when you get your healthy dog, and you won't have to feel guilty about contributing to the demise of "good" dogs. Many dogs are breeding that shouldn't be, contributing to behavior and health problems that we shouldn't have to be dealing with.
It's better for you and your dog in the long run to spend the money on a well bred dog, or to adopt from a shelter.

You can get an adorable Shiba Inu from a great breeder for that much. I suggest looking into that and never going to pet stores that sell dogs ever again.
ilovetorofl: I'm not losing or gaining any money on this. I don't breed Shiba Inus, but I have seen dogs in the shelters suffering. I'm not a breeder; I'm a dog nerd who loves her pound puppy and wants to see more success stories like hers.

I applaud you for knowing that that is a fault.
Now what you need to do is forget buying from the pet stores because those dogs come from puppy mills.
Visit some dog shows and then talk with some people their about their dogs. If you can't find one there go to the shiba inu club of america site and look under a term like rescue or breeder referral.

DON'T BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE! Do some research, find a reputable breeder, and then get one.... It's probably gonna be more expensive than that, just so you know. Better yet, search for a good rescue or check out your local shelters. Those dogs need good homes. Pet stores support puppy miills, which are a terrible existence for the Mom-dogs AND the puppies. It's disgusting.

Yes, it's expensive.
The reason good dogs are so expensive is because the breeders go to a lot of trouble and spend a lot of money testing and proving their dogs. They don't want to pass on genetic diseases that will make your dog sick later in life, such as hip dysplasia, blindness, etc.
When you buy a good dog, you're paying for a healthy dog.
Breeders who sell to pet stores don't do any of these tests. They see the amount that good breeders are charging and think they can get away with charging the same amount--but they're not selling the same product.
When you spend $1000 on a dog from a pet store, you're getting an inferior dog. The dog will likely still make a great pet, but you may pay for it in the years to come in heartache and treating medical problems.
Nonetheless, I've never seen a dog in a pet store cost that much. I think it's expensive even for a pet store.

So, if you already know about puppy mills but you still want a pet store puppy, then you DON'T CARE about puppy mills. Go ahead and buy the $1000 dog- if you really are this insensitive then you deserve to get ripped off for the BLOOD MONEY you're giving them! Pet stores aren't the final link in a disgusting chain of cruelty- YOU ARE.

What will it cost in dollars, or what will it cost in suffering?
Consider this: Almost all, and I mean 99.99%, of puppies in pet shops are from puppymills and backyard breeders. These animals are bred until dead. They are puppy manufacturing machines, and have no life as a pet. They are kept as cheaply as possible to keep profits high. Some puppymillers have even been known to chop up the dogs and puppies that die in whelping (puppy-birth) and feed them to the surviving dogs! They are kept in stacked cages to make it possible to keep more producing puppies in less space. The uring and feces from the dogs on top drops on the dogs below. The vet care is shoddy at best, if it even exists. Do you know what they do to keep noise from barking dogs down? They shove a pvc pipe down the dog's throat and pound it with a hammer until they sever the vocal cords.
Do you want to be a reason they continue to abuse dogs for a buck? Do you think you can sleep at night knowing some of the money you paid for a petshop dog will be used to buy another dog to have it bred until it's dead? Go to www.nopuppymills.com Please look at this horror, and pledge not to buy fromn a petshop. Adoption is the best option.
Do you think any amount of money is as important as stopping this horror?

One of my kids was in Western Illinois University four years back. I stopped at a pet store on the square in that town (Macomb, Illinois) and they had registered Shiba Inus for $350. I don't know much about the breed or price other than that the man said they were an "almost feral" type breed. They looked like coyote puppies and had a unique bark.
And tell the other people who are insulting you to lighten up. If they sold pets at a reasonable cost, you wouldn't be asking about price. Most of the people who complain about "puppymills" sell dogs and are whining from the point of a profit motive because they feel they are loosing money.
