this is for EVERYONE! catholics, baptists, mormons, lutherans, methodists, etc...please read..

why is it that so many folks here on R & S often say things like, "I'm not bashing them. i am just bashing their religion"....but then those SAME people who are "just bashing the religion"....turn around and question the intelligence of other people?? They say things like "Oh, how can anyone believe that??" or "they must not be thinking!"

that is NOT just bashing the religion. that's bashing the PEOPLE who follow that religion. when you say things like that, you are grossly implying that the other person isn't as intelligent as you.

i mean, why do people have to try and justify their own rude behavior, and then hypocritically turn around and MAKE personal attacks against others??

thoughts?

kent_shakespeare - what "double standard"? did you not see my first sentence? this question is directed at EVERYONE even if they are religious.

don't get so defensive. this wasn't supposed to be an attack against non-religious people. i ask because many religious people here are not tolerant of other religous people

I can't answer for why other people choose to do that.

What I do know is that I feel a great desire to learn about the beliefs of people who are loving and respectful, and I feel very little desire to learn from people who show no respect and who accept "knowledge" of other religions from secondary sources.

I will worship Almighty God according to the dictates of my own conscience... and I feel it's only right that everyone else can do the same. There's a reason why God gave us minds and hearts of our own... so we could all use them to try and find Him. I think if he wanted us to be all the same, he would not have given us free will.

It's a hard habit to break. I'll be honest. I've had many an argument with people who bash or insult. And I like to bash and insult right back. It's out of irritation and anger. I prefer to take the high road, but some days, I just can't do it. I get fed up with trying to be nice.

Hope that helps. I'm human. So is everyone else here. Religion and belief are very private issues that we are opening up for discussion. Getting defensive and angry is bound to happen. But neither defensiveness or anger are unhealthy when dealing with the intellect. I say embrace it.

People get p*ssed off at people disagreeing and questioning their beliefs on any level be it the films, music, places you like or the god(s) you worship. Religious beliefs are based in the soul of people and can be very ingrained into 'who they are' and so there is an added personal fierceness when the subject of religion is concerned - if people believe there is something bigger than them in their life attacking that and bringing them back into your own perceived reality is a very hurtful thing to do. Wars have been fought over religious beliefs, millions of people throughout history killed for them. I personally dont have a faith and dont believe in something bigger but I greatly admire people who do, in all faiths - I dont believe that any person should ever be persecuted for trying to make the world a better place through their beliefs no matter what those might be.

Anyone who has read one of the totally illogical and unreasonable posts by people purporting to be atheists on this forum has had to question the posters intelligence and/or education.

Sure, Christians sometimes make silly posts or mis quote scripture.....

BUT, most Christians do not claim to be "logical", "reasonable" or "intellectual".

Christians also do not claim to understand or support a theory, evolution as an example, when they are essentially clueless about the theory and/or the entire scientific method.

Sometimes the illogic, unreasonableness, of a post is so hypocritical and egregious that you have to point out the base stupidity of it to the poster.

I'm Mormon and I've had personal attacks because of my often pro-Mormon answers. Al thought I never answer in rude manner or something, I have a few haters. I don't only post serious questions, I also like to post silly questions that are harmless and nothing but attempting to be funny without any harm talking, or offensive/inappropriate content. The other day 1 user told me that she (or he) had printed my questions and that she was going to send them to the University I said I wanted to apply to. Another user said in an answer to the question of one of my contacts that I am "a stupid brainwashed Mormon." That same user has said more mean things referring personally to me without even knowing me. Last week when Cheese and Rice's account was deleted, he wrote a blog in 360 blaming me and saying X-rated insults about me, I posted it in YA and some users replied. Then he found out as I told him that I had nothing to do with his deleted account and he deleted the nasty comments but not the complete blog, but anyways I have no resentment against him. I have gotten hate emails just because I'm Mormon, saying that we are losts, weird, and a bunch of stuff. I just igore everything, I know that not everyone can always agree and there is freedom of speech. I was even thinking to leave R&S but then another user told me that none of these people know me and that anyways it is very possible that I never meet any of these people in real life and that made me think and I stayed. I am not going to leave. But I think that people shouldn't be mean to others and only judging them by their beliefs, it's sad to see how intolerant people can be.

I don't quit follow your reasoning. Religion is made up of both a concept and a people. Some of those people are vocally unstable, argumentative, and claim a moral superiority over anyone else. Calling them an 'idiot' or worse is a gut reaction, but harmless. Most people have lumped "Criticizing" as "Bashing", so if you'd like to redefine or reclarify the terms, please do.

It's much like watching some fool pass you on the right and weave in and out of traffic just to be in front of you. You'd really like to strangle that guy, but there's really no law against being a 'jerk', so we have to put up with it.

The Great Pumpkin said in the Holy Pumpkin Seed verse 3:12, "He who asketh questions about other religions, and personal attacks, shall never make it to the Great Pumpkin Patch"

You are offensive to the Great Pumpkin. It's right there for you to read. The Great Pumpkin said it Himself.

The above is an example of the stupidity non-believers have to put up with. If you spout such non-sense, be prepared to take the logical backlash.

I completely agree! When you attack a belief (of any kind) you are attacking a person.
I am a Christian and I have a lot of Atheist in my contacts, whom I consider to be true friends. It amazes me when I see some of them completely make fun of Christianity. It's as if they don't know they are making fun of me.
Same goes for some of the Christians in my contacts, how they go after other beliefs.

It's one thing to disagree, but it's another thing to try to humiliate!
