Does anyone else get really nervous about starting a new job? I may be getting offered a new job that would cause me to change residences as well as adapt to a new work environment. I am very anxious about this change. Am I unusual to feel this way? For people who get nervous about such things, how did you deal with the change and what strategies did you use to calm your nerves? Any advice will help : )

Hi Pam, no you're not on your own. I am 65 and four years ago was made redundant after many years in one job. I was too young to retire and managed to get a job for Christmas as a temp in a local Argos. Luckily I was kept on and am still there. When I got the job at first I was excited but as start date approached I got the jitters. My first morning was awful until I actually arrived but then the retraining took my mind off it and the people I worked with made me welcome. By the end of a week no problem. Just concentrate on the good things, new job, new friends and a a chance to improve yourself. Don't worry it will be fine Good luck and all the best.

I just did what you are about to do. Look at it like an adventure. You get to see new places, try new restaurants, do new things, and meet new people.

Keep a positive attitude and work hard. After a week or so, ask your boss if you are learning what you need to learn and doing what you need to do. Keep doing that every two weeks or so. If you don't know how to do something, then ask how to do it before you start doing it. I know that sounds incredibly obvious, but it takes at least twice as much work to undo a mistake than it does to ask and do it correctly the first time. Your boss knows that and will be happy you asked. Be organized and work as efficiently as possible.

Not only do those things make you look good to your boss, they really do help you learn and become a productive part of the company more quickly. I was supposed to be trained for 6 months before becoming the head of my department. After 7 weeks of doing that, my bosses decided to cut my total training time down to three months. I take over the department next month

You don't say what the new job is. Basically, you need to give yourself a few months at least before you like it. I've been in this job nearly a year now, working nights in a young persons hostel, doing overnight reception and general security, and I enjoy it.

I have had many changes over the last few years, but the main thing to do is relax. It depends on the job though.

Just enjoy the new challenges & the new people. Show that you are interested in the job & it's potential. 'They' are also nervous because you are a new threat, gloat on it, you have the power!.
