You don't have the money, you don't have the money.
I can't stand people who try and ask for upgrades.
I am a 1K member for United. It makes all the frequent fliers look like we don't earn it.
You come in there with a free upgrade when we pay or companies pay for it, or we get rewarded with free tickets in Business.
You can't get a free upgrade unless the airline has done something very wrong, even if they have they will most likely just give you a Voucher for a discount on a future flight.
If you want Business or First Class, pay for it.
If you don't sit in coach.
Might sound harsh, but nothing is free and well desrved people (wealthy) get well deserved things.

The best way I know is to have enough frequent flyer miles to either upgrade or purchase award travel. Some airlines may allow you to purchase an upgrade at check-in for prices lower than if you pre-purchased the ticket if they know there will be empty seats. But there is really no such thing as cheap first-class tickets, and as your first answer said, it's hard to get cheap coach tickets these days, much less first-class.

sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
buy your tickets as you do and then when you go to the airport to get your boaring passes, talk to the agent.
got any first class and they will check. then offer to give then a $20 to change your tickets.
Nine of 12 times this has worked for me.
When I can control my flights I travel beore 6 a.m. and after 8 p.m. so they can do the upgrade faster as there are no bosses in the terminal
9-5 forget it too many passengers and too many supervisors
but it does work

Just pay your dues like everybody else does. At check in time ask for a free upgrade, sometimes it works especially if you are a frequent flier with that airline. Lots of luck.
