SHAKESPEARE UGLY STIK Lite in 6ft 6" or 7ft model
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20374&id=0023483112342a&navCount=1&podId=0023483&parentId=cat20374&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20374
(which also comes with a free bag to carry your gear in)

Of course you'll also need a reel to attach to the rod....... I'd suggest one of these: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20333&id=0036079120604a&navCount=4&podId=0036079&parentId=cat20333&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20333

And some line to put on the reel.......... http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrapped.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat600392&rid=&indexId=cat600392&navAction=push&masterpathid=&navCount=7&parentType=index&parentId=cat600392&id=0017505
(I'd go for 10-12lb line)

Shakespeare Ugly Stik. Best fishing rod for the money. I use expensive St. Croix rods but I also still use my 8-foot ugly stik.

A good beginner pole would be spincasting or spinning rods which ever you feel most comfortable with.
