Usually, systems engineers have flexible schedules, depending on what phase their project is in. In the days & weeks leading up to a design review, they're putting in a lot of hours getting ready.

Once development is kicked-off, the systems engineer usually falls back into a normal 8-5 workday. That is until there's a problem getting the system built or if an interface spec is bad. Then they're back putting in the hours until the problem gets resolved.

Systems engineers are normally salaried employees, so no overtime pay. Some companies will give 'comp time' so if you work 60 hours one week, you only have to work 20 the next -- but only if your supervisor approves and your schedule permits.

Vacation time is determined by the company you work for, and is based on the number of years you've been with the company. New hires usually start with 2 weeks of vacation per year, and it increases a little each year you're with the company.

When you can go on vacation is typically agreed upon by you and the project manager. Approval is based on what is going on with your project. Forget about going on vacation just prior to a design review or major project milestone.

Under normal circumstances they work 40 to 50 hours per week, such as from 7 AM to 5 PM, rarely any evening or night shift. IF there is a big project and a deadline, then they can put in more hours and work some weekends. Normally they get weekends off.

Vacations are usually given as a certain number of days off, to be taken when the engineer desires, within the bounds of when the workload is normal or slow. The engineer's manager should be competent enough to allow for vacation whenever the engineer desires.

I have not heard of any companies in the US that force fixed-time vacations. I have heard of companies that force you to take a certain number of hours per year (mine is one of those, now), but you still have the choice as to when to take it.
