Every year for four years, she's given me extra time off to participate in our local arts festival, even though it's still a busy time of the season. It really goes against my personality to "suck up" in a fake way, and I'm not usually into card giving that much, but I feel she deserves some sort of thanks besides me just saying it. What should I do?

Would it be better to give her a card before, during, or after the event?

I think maybe a nice card and maybe something small [from the said festival] would be a very gracious way of acknowledging that she is actually going out of her way for you.

I would not see it as sucking up at all.................but don't make a big thing of it in front of others at the work place.

regards

I would say to give it afterwards..........EDIT.

Yes most definitely give her a card. I don't think is fake, since you are really feeling it in your heart. Go for it. A card is a nice thought....becoz it doesn't have the weight and consequences of a material thing like other gifts do, and conveys your personal thoughts in a touching way. But if you feel like you want to gift her something, keep it something small and inexpensive, but in good taste.

Our boss won a 50/50 split club and he bought us
all breakfast and coffee. We gave him a thank
you card and he really thought it was a nice idea.

I would give her a card and a small sample of your handiwork after the event.

have to agree the card would be nice, lets her know you do appreciate what she does and are not taking advantage of situations

i think a card with a short note is a perfect way to say thanks. it's not sucking up. it's being thoughtful and professional. who doesn't appreciate that?

a thankyou card would be nice. i don't think it would be unappropriate. unless you give her a gift too. then it would seem like you were bribing her.
