My wife is 23 weeks pregnant and has cravings for coke, potato chips, flavor ice, and McDonalds cheeseburgers. Shold I be concerned about a diet of junk food at this stage of her pregnancy?

I would be more worried about NOT getting her those things!

Seriously, she will be just fine as long as she is getting her vitamins, etc and not just living on the junk food.

Ask her doctor!

I would be concerned, yes. It's very important that a pregnant woman get balanced nutrition. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can affect the development of the child. I hope she's taking prenatal vitamins!

Encourage your wife to eat at least two balanced, healthful meals a day ... meals that include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus whole grains, fiber, and protein. Cravings for junk food are frequently triggered by low blood sugar and a feeling of lethargy. High fat, high sugar foods like cheeseburgers give you a temporary high kind of similar to a caffeinated soda.... but you end up crashing and feel worse later. A more balanced diet will make her feel better and may even dull her junk food cravings. On the other hand, she needs to be free to eat what she wants at that third meal and maybe for snacks.

Help shop and cook for her, make it easier for her to eat well. She and the baby will be healthier for it!

Well it is the old adage that she's eating for two. Her body's working overtime and burning up extra fat and calories, and hormones help with the cravings too, just like PMS time! You're very sweet to indulge her. If she didn't eat like this before, then chances are they're just cravings and she'll eat normally after the birth. Or in a month she may be screaming that she never wants to see another cheeseburger or potato chip again. Go with it. When you see your baby you'll forget all about those weird midnight runs for snack food. :)

The doctor will probably tell her around her 3rd trimester to slow down on the junk food but for right now she is fine.
Just make sure she takes her daily vitamins, plenty of water and exercise.
Congrats by the way!!

No. You should be concerned about your own safety if you DON'T get her what she craves. Go to the store. Fast.

Once this craving is satisfied, you might be able to convince her to eat something healthier... but a little junk food won't hurt too much.

I craved soda while I was pregnant too.

She can eat whatever she likes as long as it's in moderation. She needs to be careful though because the doctor told me when you eat a lot of sugar it slow oxygen to the baby. (I can't remeber exactly what he said, but that was the point.)
You an always bring it up to the doctor at the next appointment.

Nope , just get the girl anything she wants. The day the baby is born you'll know why. Congratulations to you both.
