Or is it just when they get "out of hand?"

Heh . . . yes, Whillow, I *was* watching "Charmed" when I posted this . . . lol.

I can't help myself. It's quite possibly the stupidest show EVER---I Dream of Jeannie had more intellectual content and a more plausible cosmology to boot---but . . . well, I have a hopeless, raging, schoolboy crush on Alyssa Milano. Quite possibly the Goddess's finest achievement, or evolution's. Enough of a crush to sit through entire shows of that dreck waiting for her to appear on screen in tight pants or a midriff-baring top . . . or biker leather . . . or as a mermaid. If there's a "Catholic schoolgirl" episode I've missed, I'll probably order the whole season on DVD just to watch IT . . . *G*

At any rate, it really, really annoyed me that WITCHES were talking about SIN on last night's episode. How messed up is *that?* It's bad enough that the "white lighters" are thinly veiled "guardian angels" and the "Elders" are standins for Yahweh . . . the "7 Deadly" in a BOX? How Catholic!

I guess you cant be proud of anything you do, its human nature to envy, everyone gets angry its impossible not to unless your a robot. Dont gluttony and sloth kinda go hand and hand now a days. And what the hell I cant have lust either... pffft... I guess I'll go lay down and die now.. oh wait I cant that might be considered sloth.

They are all dangerous when allowed to get out of hand. Too much pride leads to poor decisions, feeling like one cannot make a mistake. Envy causes on to scheme for that which others have already. Avarice deprives others so one can accumulate more than he needs, and sloth prevents tasks from being done. Gluttony is form of avarice, and lust is like envy, in that it drives one to take what should be freely given.

The explanation is in the name: "Deadly" refers to the fact that these sins are not in any specific act or action, but part and parcel of the human condition -- therefore, only death can free us from these sins.

Catechism teachers can spend many weary hours trying to teach their students how to find the line between human condition and "sin" -- or they can do what my teachers did and "leave it up to your conscience."

I think that anything in excess causes a person to become "unbalanced". Your list of "sins" are names used for normal behavior that's become "out of hand". Pride = too much confidence, gluttony = too much eating, lust = too much desire... etc. The ancient Greeks believed that in moderation, anything's fine (provided it didn't harm anyone else...). Their saying - all good things in moderation... is something that we all should probably heed.

I don't believe one can derive those from the bible. The "sin" discussed in the Word of God is described as leaven in the OT and anything that doesn't conform to the will of God (anything unChristlike) in the NT.

When any one of these, or all overtake your life, and that is all you are about,,,,then yes,,,,,they are deadly,,,,,
example:
In all honesty, there is nothing wrong with someone taking a drink, it is how they chose to deal with it, are they just thirsty, just a glass of wine,,,one can of beer,???,,,it is when you choose to get tanked,,,,,,that it becomes a deadly sin, because you are overindulging,,,,,,
Read into the Bible more,,,,or ask a preacher,,,,I am sure they would be happy to give you a bit more incite,,,,,
Good luck in finding your answer,,,,

Yes, I think it's an "out of hand" thing. I think excess in just about anything is "bad". I wouldn't say "deadly" except maybe in the movie "SE7EN", but otherwise not.

These were created in a work of fiction, not from scripture. They make it easier to condemn people though so they are embraced.

Pride killed Hitler.
Envy will make you sleep with another guys wife that will get you killed.
Avarice will make you do some illegal things that could get you improsined or killed.
Sloth might lead to an early death.
Same for gluttony.
Lust will help you get aids.
If you don't think these are sins then well help yourself.
