At the mall by my house there are spots up close with signs reserved for senior citizens. Is it illegal to park there, or is it just commen courtesy not to park there?

Everyone can stop telling me to stop being lazy. I NEVER said I parked there. For all you know I might be the senior citizen asking the question....
I just want to know if it is illegal to park there if you are not a senior citizen. Thanks....

It's not illegal under the law, but it may be against the shopping center's policy. This means that the police can't do anything about it (since it's not against the law) but the mall security could tow your car away.

It's private property and the mall has the right to make rules on who can park where. I don't think it's illegal, per se, but the mall CAN (and will) have your car towed if you are in violation of their policy (although they most likely would have to put up a sign stating their policy or face a civil lawsuit from people whose cars were towed without warning).

You know why it costs so much when your car gets towed sometimes? Because the towing company splits some of the money with the mall, since the mall is providing them business.

Handicapped spots, on the other hand - I'm pretty sure it's illegal to park in any spot designated as handicapped, unless you are in fact handicapped.

You should respect your elders, and not park in spaces reserved for them. I see similar spaces that say "reserved for pregnant mothers." I try not to park in them either.

Technically, if it is an official sign, it has to be obeyed, as a handicapped sign. I am not sure of the laws in your area, so I cannot tell you if they have legislated "reserved spaces" for seniors or not. If it is just a sign posted by a chamber of commerce, or another business organization, and not an official sign put up by the local authorities, you can park there if you wish. Here in NY, the only official signs that designate who can park somewhere, are handicapped signs.

I would just use some courtesy myself.

Like Jeremy_Hancock said. It is up to each state to set its own laws and most don't have any for other than handicapped spots. Most parking lots are private property and even traffic laws (most) cannot be enforced on them.

But, you could be towed by the store if they wanted to. Most stores don't want to alienate customers though and would never do that.

In general, state laws only cover handicapped spaces. However, the shopping center might reserve the right to tow your car if you park there aren't aren't elderly, handicapped, or pregnant. So stop being lazy - the extra 50 foot walk from non-reserved spaces isn't going to kill you.

Try exercising a little common courtest. You might be a senior citizen one day.

Legal? I don't know how you could enforce it? I've seen people around 50 in terrible shape, and people in their 70's in excellent shape.
Much too vague to be enforced.Especially, when you consider handicapped spaces, which do require a permit.

It is not illegal, but we should use common courtesy and keep them open for the old folks. I would find it embarrassing to be seen parking there.

Reserved means reserved. It's just like a handicap spot. Park farther away and don't risk the ticket, besides, walking is good for you.
