Go for a walk an hour before sleep.
Read a book. Always works for me.
Have a warm, not hot bath. Too hot will stimulate you.
Listen to some soft music. Baroque is good.
Some say a small shot of whatever.
Do a simple progressive muscle exercise.
Do a meditation.

Sleep comes in balance with other areas of your life and health. When your life is going well, you can skip the meds.
Eat, drink water and healthy fluids,
get fresh air and exercise.
Lowering your stress level, #1 take off your watch and put your cell phone in a drawer for a week.
taking time just for yourself each day - atleast 1/2 hr.
Work on a job or school or project, and when that day's time is completed, walk away, think about something entirely different.
Avoid anger and arguments
Avoid watching movies that give the adrenaline rush - terror, X-games, Violence, extreme emotion, disaster. It can be very difficult to sleep once you've been excited or fearful.
Work in a garden with plants or animals
read a book for the fun of it
listen to "calming music" or play an instrument yourself.
Allow yourself "wind-down time" for atleast an hour before you plan to get to sleep
Plan your sleep for the same time every day, and make that your commitment 7 days a week.
Go to the bathroom beofre heading to bed.
Sleep alone - so you're not awakened by another person
If you do fall asleep in your recliner chair or on the couch, have a blanket within reach, because moving to a bed in a different room can waken you sufficiently to not be able to get back to sleep.
Some people are bothered by light or noise, or the lack there of. Some sleep best if the air is a little cool, with a fan going. Some feel most secure if there is a nightlight.
Some people living alone actually sleep best with a radio or TV on, so they don't hear house "noises" at night.
Having the same blanket each night that you find to be a soothing texture and comfortable warmth aids in sleep.

Get up earlier, even on days when you don't have to get up early. Keeping a schedule can help a lot. I like to listen to white noise when I'm falling asleep. My alarm clock has sounds of the surf that play for an hour, and I have yet to remain awake for the full hour when that's on, and it's been 2 years.

I find it hard to sleep and have tried many of these but these may help you. good luck
hot chocolate
soothing music (meditation)
classical music like beatoven (this has been known to help me)
a bath before you go to bed
if you awake in the night try not to get too much to eat, maybe a bannana,
dont go for a cigarette before you go to bed, or if you get up in the night, fags and food are known as stimulants and you want to relax, set yourself a time so your sleep may be structured eventually if you keep the times, your body will natually become like a clock, if you get up early you may also find that there is not much need for a clock,
sometimes the day as in worries, stress etc things that we look back on during the days work or activities may keep us awake, try to keep paper and pen by your bed maybe a diary, write down your thourghts before you sleep, if you cannot think, relax and they will just come to you, if you check the security in your home you to wont have to worry bout this, do you sleep alone? this could be something, check your drugs and alcohol check, in the short term it may seem they are helping you with your sleep but in the long term your sleep is gradually just gonna get worse because you have not dealt with current issues, you have attempted to cover them up and hide them, I wish you all the best I hope this helps, sometimes I fall asleep watchin afilm in the livin room and then when on awaking up and going to bed I automatically can seem to wake up, try stayin to your bed, rutine will help, try to change this routine to your desire and wot works best for you. go to the toilet before going to bed

Try meditating on the positive aspects of your life and praying. I find it to be very relaxing and I have fallen asleep often even though I don't want to. I hope this helps.

Looks like everybody pretty much covered it, the only thing I can add is, when you lie down, pretend you are sinking through the bed. This will relax your entire body all at once instead of one part at a time.

Yeah,
It can be hard to fall asleep when you:
-eat before you go to sleep
-drank alot and fast before going to sleep
-you were to exited before going asleep [jumping etc.]
-MOST EFFECTIVE : you exercised before going to sleep, it would make your blood circulate too fast that your body is too hyper to fall asleep
-had a cup of tea/coffee/soda or had some choclate
How do I fall asleep anyway?
-have a pill of panadol extra.
- or have ONE pill of panadol night... that made me sleepy for 3 days, i even slept in school!! :P [but dont worry, my body is sensitive to everything and will react fast, so I guess its ok with you] ;)

Forgive everyone who has hurt you, and find forgiveness for yourself for hurting others. Turn it all over to God and rest in His peace. I'm not a church fanatic I do believe forgiveness is the best sleep aid on the market. Clear your mind and have a song in your heart and enjoy a good night sleep.
