My boyfriend has a sweet and energetic Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He's only a medium-sized dog, but he's too strong for me to walk or play with.

I'd like to have my own dog, preferably very small. It would need to get along well with the Staffie and keep him company. I really like Maltichons (tiny Maltese-Bichon cross-breed), but I am open to ideas. Which breed do you recommend and why?

Please respect the community guidelines as you answer. Thanks!

maltese - bichon cross dont come from a reputable breeder these dogs come from puppy mills
unless you have seen this dog at a shelter and are adopting him i would not get him because you are beeing over charged for a mixed breed dog that is unhealthy and is coming from a puppy mill
i suggets a sturdier breed such as a westie (but they sometimes dont get along with other dogs)
or havanese
first go to a shelter once you find a dog you are interested in adopting most animal shelters will let you bring your current dog oto see if the 2 get along.

It really depends on how well the Staffie does with other dogs. Bully breeds can sometimes be dog aggressive and high prey drive and if this dog does not do well with other dogs or views your small dog as prey, it could be dead in one bite. I answered a question yesterday where someone's small dog was nearly killed by a husky, another dog with high prey drive. So proceed with caution and perhaps test the staffie with some other dogs to see how he does. I'd also recommend getting a female - neutered male/spayed female combos usually work out the best.

Also - don't pay a breeder for a mixed breed dog such as Maltichon - it is a rip-off and quality breeders will never breed mixed breed dogs intentionally. If you want a mixed breed, the shetlers are full of them for much lower prices and they are equally good dogs deserving of homes. If you want a purebred, pick either a Maltese or a Bichon - in your case, I'd go Bichon since they are a little bigger dog and less likely to be viewed as prey by a Staffie.

It can work. I have four dogs, a Chi/Rat Terrier mix, 9 years old. He is top dog. A 4 1/2 year old Beagle. An APBT, 4 years old. The puppy, that my grandson brought home a couple of weeks ago, is another APBT. The only problem was the older Pit, she would growl and snap at the puppy, the Pit Bull dog aggression. Within two weeks of introducing them and my grandson using the Dog Whisper trick of putting the older Pit on the floor on her back and shushing her when the pup was around they are running around and playing together now. The 55 lb and the 10 lb. It is so cute.
Your Pit may have some problems but keep a watch and introduce the puppy slowly and it will work.

so you basically have a pit bull. A lot of people who don't own "staffordshire bull terriers" don't know what they are. A lot of dogs get along with this breed a lot. I work in an animal clinic and they are the best breed to work with 99% of the time. You should make sure that you introduce them to each other first and that there is somebody there to watch bc if the dog gets a hold of the little one..then it's not gonna be fun. But I would recommend anything small but large enough to fend for itself if it has too. And also as long as he doesn't seem to dog aggressive then you should be okay to get something small..

The bigger question is does the staffie get along with other dogs?
Pit bull-type dogs are great, however, it's important to remember that they were originally bred to fight other dogs. Because of this, it's not uncommon for some pit bull-type dogs to be aggressive towards other dogs (this doesn't mean that all staffies are dog-aggressive, but some are). What dogs has the staffie been around? Was he ever aggressive towards them? Were they big/medium/small, male/female, spayed or neutered/intact? If the staffie is good with other dogs, your best bet is to find a rescue group and tell them you're looking for a small dog who is also good with other dogs. They can help match you up with an appropriate dog from there.

Well, I have nothing against staffies, pits...etc but I dont really think that a tiny breed would be the right of a companion for your current dog. If hes too strong for you to play with, think of the damage he could cause that little maltichon just playing. I think that you should talk to a behaviorist or trainer or vet even and explain your situation and what you want. They should be able to recommened a suitable playmate for him and a companion of you.

many time the Staffodshire Bull Terriers do not get along well with any other dogs. They do best as a single dog and do not need company of other dogs. they can be dog aggresive.

You can check with your local spca ( shelter or pound) or rescues to see if they have any good size dogs for you and see if they allow you to bring your dog in to see how they get along.

also I do find if you bring a young puppy into a house it is easier then bringing an older pup/dog. Althought you may have issues when the pup is older.

there really is no perfect answer for you.

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

I really don't have a clue as to what would get along with your dog. Depends on the dog.

Don't pay a bunch of money for a mixed breed mutt from a backyard breeder. Geez! Go to a shelter if you want a mutt. Why line the pockets of the backyard breeders who purposely mate these dogs because ignorant people will buy them.
