can you open MS documents if they are forwarded to you? Seems like I won't need to pay the $$ to get MS office if I download this one for free.

Sure. OpenOffice is compatible with MS Office. You can also get the free Word Viewer from Microsoft.com that lets you view Word docs but not create or edit them

OpenOffice is the best thing out there. It really is the only thing that can replace MS Office, and like you said its free. It will let you install only the parts that you want. the only thing that it doesn't offer is an option for outlook, but if you need it you can get thunderbird from mozila.

Also it will open all MS office files, and let you save in the same MS format so you can send files bakc and forth to others you would have to open them, or to e-mail and print off site.

It is often caused by your anti-virus program: every time you want to open a document (even if you are off-line!), these stupid programs scan every document you want to use. When off-line: KILL your anti-virus Put it back on when you surf. Run it when you close your connection. Personally, I have no AV program whatsoever. A good firewall and a sniffer that only checks what's comming in from the net.
