My 8 year old son is no longer satisfied with "when a man and a woman love each other, God sends a baby to grow in the mommy's belly" I have 2 younger children and he is fully aware that they grew in my belly and that the doctor had to cut my belly to get them out when they were ready to be born. (c-section) but now he wants to know the specifics.... when, how and all that.... how should I explain the process in an age appropriate manner.... I'm afraid he'll learn about it at school before I can explain it to him.

Be honest with the kid! You don't have to go into indepth detail, but he should know! T.V. and public school could totally give him the wrong idea about this stuff!

If his Daddy is in the picture, I'd let him handle it. If not, try this:
"When the Mommy and the Daddy decide they want to make a baby, the Daddy puts his penis in the Mommy's vagina and squirts sperm inside her. If God decides to give Mommy and
Daddy a baby, then the sperm from Daddy finds the egg that Mommy has ready and the sperm goes inside the egg. Then the egg grows into a baby inside Mommy's belly. Sometimes Mommy can let the baby come out of her vagina, but if she can't then the doctor cuts it out of her belly. Does that answer all of your questions?" That's how my Aunt Harriet explained it to my cousins, and I was in the closet, listening. My mom never explained anything. Good for you for answering the questions so your child doesn't have to find out on the street!
Best wishes.

There is a book called, "where do babies come from" It's a cartoon book, and it's been around forever. It's not silly, it shows and explains everything. My parents showed it to me when I was around 5 or 6, and my husband's parents hae used it for all their kids.
If I were you check it out at the bookstore and see if you are ok with what it says, then get it and start the explanation before he gets the wrong ideas from schoolmates.

Good luck

you should talk to him very soon. If you are unsure what to say then go the bookstore and find a book. There are many that deal with this topic. Find one that fits with your beliefs and value. Do it soon, because TV and other children are telling him stuff already. Good Luck!

I would tell him the bare minim for now. He is still young. My eight year old wanted to know when I got pregnant with his little brother, or at least he thought he did. Once I went into a little detail about the womans anatomy he did not want to know anymore. And don't worry about him finding anything out in school, he still in the girls are gross stage.

It isn't much help, but I found the most interesting "Where babies come from" book. It is German, and it really shows how Americans (though not exclusivley) like to sugar coat things. I have it posted on my blog:

well in school they start a "family life" class about this sort of stuff (at least in my town) and to be honest you should tell him because he wil find out from friends or school. or tv.
