Depends on the dog - I had a Chow cross that just loved our cat, would sleep together.

As friends or food?

Most well socialized dogs will take well to cats if done at a young age. Exceptions would be hunting type dogs with too strong a prey drive, so a boxer should be fine if he learns young what is appropriate.

If the dog is a puppy when it meets the cat they should get along fine - not sure I would be comfortable introducing a large breed dog of any sort to a new kitten. (I would make sure they were supervised closely when together and when you can't be there keep them apart.)

They can. But it helps if you had the kitty first. My Boxers were raised by my Maine Coon. All were the best of friends :)

LOL--but my Maine Coon was 16 lbs and basically whipped the Boxers into shape.

It's going to depend completely on the dog, but I wouldn't hold my breath. We have a bumper sticker on my dog's cage that says, "I love cats--they taste just like chicken!"
