The hatred has gone on for thousands of years. Ismael was Abraham's first son (by the Egyptian servant to Sarah). Isaac received the continuation of G-d's blessing (Genesis 8, v 13) to Abraham rather than Ismael because the blessing was meant for the Jewish line. The same thing happened with Esau (first born of Isaac) and Jacob (the younger twin who received the blessing). Both Ismael and Esau became the father's of the people who later became Muslims. They are demanding that which was specifically denied them in Biblical times because they had grown up to favor violence and idolatry while their younger brothers favored healing, prayer, and respect for G-d.

In the 40s, when Jews were being murdered by the millions, the UN decided that they could have Israel. The UN didn't own that land, but with the best of intentions, we gave it to the Jews so they could be safe.
But the people who lived there got a bit pissed off about this.
In retrospect, maybe we should have given them South Dakota.

They say you hate most what is within yourself.
Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all considered Abrahamic religions, and they split thousands of years ago (well, Christianity sprung up less than 2,000 years ago). The primary squabble, it seems to me, is who is "savior" or god and who his prophet is. Why people are willing to brutally slaughter others over semantics has long been a mystery to me.

They remind me of children arguing over a stupid toy or something.
"It's my holy land!"
"No! I had it first"
"Nuh uh its mine! Gimmy it!"
