I got laid off from a govt. contractor while the renewal investigation for my TS clearance was being conducted. That was about four months ago. What happens when I get another job that requires the clearance - will the investigation just be picked up or does it start all over again? The original clearance investigation was done over five years ago. Do I still have a clearance? Thank you. The renewal process had been going on for almost a year. Seems like a waste to start all over again. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If your held a clearance withing the past 24 months you can be hired with your clearance in an 'overdue' status. Security clearance investigations are handled by the OPM (Office of Personnel Management) and they are so badly backed yo that they are allowing people to remain working with an expired clearance as long as the re-investigation paperwork has been submitted and you passed a Tier 1 review.

If it is a DOD clearance contact DOD and they may have the investigation done already, this will help if your looking for a job, make sure you get you clearance number when you contact them, to speed things up for your new employer.

Contact the nearest office of the Defense Intelligence Agency. They have offices in most major cities.
