I take her up north and she's a sweet girl but doesn't come every time she is called. How can I get her to come off leash every time? All the other dogs up there remain off leash and I can't wait for that too.

I DID MENTION UP NORTH. MOST OF THE TIME UP NORTH MEANS YOU HAVE PROPERTY UP THERE.

You have to train the dog in your house, you move to one side of a room (Have the dog on the otherside of the room) then call the dog. When she comes over you give her a treat then say "GOOD GIRL!" It would be easier if she was a puppy.

The suggestion of an obedience class is an excellent one. Read here https://tr.im/p7n73
It will help your dog learn to behave around other dogs, and help keep your training moving forward as you'll want to be prepared for the next class. Also, a good instructor can be a wonderful resource, someone to help you with any questions or concerns about your dog. Leash training can take a LOT of time and patience, depending upon the dog. I'm not sure what you mean by 'horrible on a leash' but my basic suggestion is that you take a lot of yummy treats with you on walks. When your dog behaves well on the leash (not pulling) praise her and give her treats. Change direction a lot so that she learns to pay attention to YOU and where you are going. It's also helpful to teach a "Watch Me" command such that whenever your dog looks at you you praise her and give her a treat. About chewing, yes a Kong is a great chew toy. Some dogs also like Nylabone brand bones. I suggest also teaching a "Leave It" command. You use this when she shows interest in chewing on something she shouldn't. Then immediately give her something she is allowed to chew, such as the Kong stuffed with somethig yummy. This same command will be helpful on walks when she wants to sniff or eat something she shouldn't. Again, when she does leave the item alone, be sure to give lots of praise. I would look into an obedience class right away. I think that you'll find that a good obedience class can help enormously! Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

When you call her and she comes give her a treat. Once she comes everytime for the treat you can start randomly hooking up her leash. Dogs are really smart and are capable of putting 2 and 2 together. Often if every time they're called in they're put on leash they learn that being called home means play time is over and have you ever met a dog that is happy when play time is over? So as long as the dog doesn't associate being called to being hooked up and taken home he should be happy to learn that being called means treats and will come more willingly.

Sounds like you need to work some more on training your dog to come. Get a long rope and tie it to her collar. Put some distance between you and then tell her to come! If she does pet her and tell her she is a good dog and give a small treat. If she does not give her a little yank on the rope and say come! Repeat till she does so without the rope. You may want to do this up north as well as home so she understands the command every where. Good Luck!

Be paitent it takes time.
But to teach her just call her name and if she comes then reward her with a treat (bone, dog food, bread) i know other people have already told you this but i am just telling you again and hopfully more!
Anyway if she does not come show her the treat that
you have and then put it away ex.(into a pocket or if it is bread then you can eat it)look dissapointed and walk away.
If you want to you can try again.
Another thing do not be intimidated by other dog owners.
Take your time! As you well know some dogs are not as bright as others(like humans or any animals)and there is
no point on pretending that she is the brightest dog on the planet but you know i think that dum dogs are actually really
nice so do not be intimidated by other owners of dogs,ok?

There are dogs that will never be reliable off leash, usually breeds of the terrier group, or huskies, Miniature Pinschers, or hounds. Dogs that are bred to run and chase without a human guiding them will often take off. I have had obed. titled MinPins take off while off leash and of my 5 current MinPins I would only trust 2. The best way to have a dog that comes in an emergency is do thousands of on lead recalls. If a dog has come on lead 1,000 times more than likely on the 1,001 it will come w/o thinking am I off leash. An Electric collar will get a dog to come but only while wearing the collar. My 2 big dogs are more than average reliable off leash and are also trained to come to a whistle. I used a Hunting Dog training book on my field bred Lab and found the whistle gets him to come at the noisy dog beach and it works better than my voice at the dog park with my Dobe when he is otherwise engaged. I bought a waterproof whistle at Wal*Mart in the boating section, bright orange, for under a couple of bucks and blow 4 times quickly then called the dogs to come in from the yard. When they came in they found food on the floor and I always use food when I use the whistle. The few times I need to use it w/o food will not hurt their coming in. But no matter how well trained my dog is I balance off leash with danger. My multi titled GSD was not walked off leash on a street, his life was not worth the risk. But I do run my dogs off leash in unfenced areas that are way off the road. My Lab does wear an E. collar on the lowest setting to prevent him from swimming in the creek with gators and otters. But the lowest setting would not deter him if he wanted to run off. Never rough up your dog when it comes to you even if you have chased it for 30 minutes, that teaches the dog coming to you=hurt.

i am training my 9 month old whippet now and i find he does best at recall when i am down at his level, and not wearing sunglasses. so i would say get down to her level so she doesn't feel threatened, then call her and praise her when she comes to you, and never chase her,if she doesn't come when called slowly walk up to her untell u can put the leash back on her.

Whistle, and Wave your arms to get her to come. It make a distraction for her, and she will come see what it is. Then, give her a treat for coming. Hope that helps :)
