Yeah it's tough not saying where you live to answer that question.

For Canada, here you need to take a firearms safety course then write a test and then fill out a few forms, mail them off and then you get your PAL (Posession and Acquisition License). There are two different classes of firearms being non-restricted (most standard rifles and shotguns) and restricted (handguns and certain semi-automatic rifles such as AR-15, M1A1's etc.) You can apply for both at the same time, it's two tests you need to take.

Once you've got your PAL you can head down and buy a firearm. However, if you want to purchase a handgun you have to show that you have a membership at an approved gun club/range.

They have a website, CFC, and there you can download the forms.

In some states such as IL a FID or Firearms Identification card is required before you can purchase a gun. I find this rather backwards and arguably in violation of the US Constitution.

In most states however no such thing is needed to simply purchase one. However to carry one concealed is another thing. Pretty much all states except Vermont require a permit to carry concealed. 40 states are now shall issue, meaning that unless the state can prove that you have a felony conviction, or a history of mental illness or drug abuse, they must issue you the permit. 8 states are may issue. In other word the state will review the reason that you want to carry a gun and then they get to decide if you life is worth being able to defend or not. 2 states have no concealed carry allowance at all.

Different states may have training requirements as well before you can get your permit.

Good luck.

Perhaps you mean a FFL (Federal Firearms License) Go to the BATF web site and download the application. Also check out the rules and regs about C & R (Curio and Relic) license. That may be the one you want. It allows you to buy collector weapons and older guns such as anything built before 1898.
If your state or city requires you to have a gun license to buy a gun then the city hall/state Capital bldg. should have information, if it is about a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) license then it is usually the County Sherrif that has the applications and handles the licensing.

I got my licence to carry by going to a safety course. I got a certificate and went to the police station to apply. Don't bother if you have a criminal record. Some states may be different. If you live in Vermont or Aalaska you don't need anything to carry a gun.

Gun license?

Most state require hunter safety course prior to obtaining a hunting license, ALL states have age requirements for purchase of a firearm. Licensing is a broad subject. Hunting license is one thing, CCW (Conceal Carry License) is another.

My state requires permit to purchase hand guns. I can use this when I make a long gun purchase to allow my dealer to not have to call into the NICS system for a purchase. As the permit to purchase pre-certs the purchase because it is issued by Law enforcement.

Actually you do not need a license to buy a gun. However depending on what you are going to purchase-may have to get a permit. Depending on the state you live in. If required these are usually issued through the county sheriff’s office.

If you are referring to a “concealed carry weapon” license-permit. Much more involved.
And if your state issues “ccw” permits (mine does and I have one) then check with a local gun dealer. They will have all the information you need pertinent to your state.

Or you could mean a license to hunt with a gun. Usually, that only requires passing a hunter safety course and being of legal age.to purchase on your own or you will need a parent or guardian to go with you and approve the purchase.

Ditto to "paul67337".

Firearm ownership was promised in the Constitution.

The idea of registering or permitting them is just plain crazy. You should move to a state that remembers the Constitution.
