Many people confuse brown sugar with cane sugar and raw sugar, it's not. Brown sugar is a mixture of white sugar and molasses, I make my own. 1 cup sugar to 1 tablespoon molasses.

White sugar is refined sugar and brown sugar has molasses and raw sugar is unrefined.

Brown sugar gets its unique dark color because it has molasses in it.
