Does it matter what consists of those 1000 calories or can it be anything as long as you stay at that point? I have a friend that can live off of soda and candy bars and not gain if she maintains a certain caloric intake. I don't plan on going that route, just wondering.

try 1200. 1000 is what ur body needs to maintain. if ur going to workout that much bring up the intake. don't forget water. ur body needs more than soda and chocolate. if i did that i would be a blimp. some people metabolisms are faster, lots faster.

It doesn'r really matter in terms of weight loss. If you're intaking 1000 calories a day and working out 5 times a week for half an hour then you're burning way more than 1000 calories so yea, technically you'll lose weight or at least not gain any weight. However, this doesn't make it healthy. If you're eating a burger or chips or candy or soda for your 1000 calories, you're losing weight but you're gaining cholesterol and a whole bunch of other types of fat that you don't need in your system. Yes, you'll be skinny, but you won't be healthy and your cholesterol will be way higher than that of someone who eats 2000 calories of fruit, veggies, and a well balanced healthy meal.

1- 1000 calories is FAR too little unless you are a midget or a house pet.

2- yes it does matter. believe it or not you can still get fat depending on your age and current metabolism.

here is why:

A- your metabolism will slow down if you don't consume enough calories and store everything as fat.

B- you will feel weaker and your body will, when it doesn't get protien cannibalize your muscle (made of protien) in order to sustain itself.

C- your friend probably has no energy or is living off of sugar highes and will eventually crash or catch type 2 diabetes.

3- you need to have vitamins and minerals in order to remain healthy. weight loss is not the sole purpose of eating. ANY eating habits must be for health first, weight loss/build secondary as what good is trying to build muscle that your body will just break down anyway and probably not even be able to build in the first place because it lacks the protien.

4- bet you have plateaued at the gym right now huh?

soda and candy bars have no nutrion so she's malnourished. 1000 calories is the bare minimum to sustain life, but is not enough to stay healthy. adults need more calories than that just to maintain basic functions, like heartbeat and respiration. anyone with that little intake will lose muscle and be in serious danger of having a heart attack. that's how most anorexics die.

I think it does, when eating soda and candy bars they provide calories, but no the nutrition your body needs. They also do not feel you up. You could probably eat grilled chicken with vegetables and consume a lot more food but only a few more calories then you would get from eating junk food and be completely full, and you would also be supplying your body with nutrients that are vital to your health.
