Our grand daughter was registered today, and much to my sons disgust and due to a silly argument they had before they went to the Registry Office (they are both only young) the baby has been registered in his partners surname. They are both regretting it now, can anyone tell me if they can change her birth certificate so she bears his surname?

I suggested they had a double barrel surname, but the girlfriend is now using the whole thing as a weapon, I cant see the relationship lasting to be honest, so having her name might be the best thing after all .

It really isn't important- the child can change her name anytime she likes and to anything she likes. But I think they have 6 weeks to make any changes they want, but that might be outdated information- I personally would keep the mother's surname, you never know... and she'll be your granddaughter no matter what her name is! Enjoy her

Charlotte I is right above as i have done the same with my 6 yr old girl. Becuase myself and her dad werent married at the time and he wasnt there when i registered her he could not go on the birth certificate and was in my name. A yr ago (so 5 yrs after) we re regestered her into his surname.

If you are in the U.K you can fill out a form from the registry Office and it can be changed to fathers surname at any age with both parents permission attending the office.

I would also advise your son tries to get his partner to let him get a parental responsibility form if they are not married so he has the same rights as she does. Again this is a simple form then a court stamps it if both parents agree.

I don't think they can change the surname on the birth certificate, but they can change it by deed poll. You just need to go to a solicitors and they'll sort it out.
Try calling the registry office and asking them about the birth certificate, but it will have to e the mother and father of the baby that go, no you I'm afraid.

When I went to register my daughters birth my ex refused to come with me. Because we weren't married he could not go on the birth certificate unless he accompanied me to the register office.

2 years later he changed his mind and we were able to go back to the register office and re register her with his name under fathers name.

If it is possible to alter it after 2 years in this way I am sure you can get it amended 1 day later to include the father and to put the correct and preferred surname on it.

Good luck, and congratulations on your new granddaughter c x x

p.s. As long as your sons name is on the birth certificate then he has parental responsibility for the child.

you can only change the birth certificate if they get married! if they really want tochange it then it has to be by deed poll but i argree with what some others have said about if they split up! my daughter got my name and i'm glad as when she was 12mths he walked out!! just out of interest why do people always assume the child should take the dads name anyway? and a sugguestion would be why not double-barrell the name an let the baby have both - no arguments then

Yes, you can change your child's surname but only if the parents get married. Otherwise, it is permanent. You can change the first names up to the age of one year. The only other is by adoption and deedpoll.

From my experience, I TOTALLY agree with Linz. You just never know... It would be a lot easier to change it to her father's last name, as opposed to doing it the other way around. Once she has the father's last name, that's it. No going back. Maybe they could compromise and use the mom's surname - dad's surname.

It's nothing to be disgusted about..a name is just a name and can be changed.

I know in our state, all you need to do to change a name is request it and start using it. Call the clerk's office and ask them what you need to do.

Of note though, they might not change it if your son calls. If they aren't married for instance, they will only change it per the mom's request. If they are married, I'm not sure.

Yes, it is possible to change it. Personally if the child's parents are not married I would suggest it haver her surname because you never know what could happen. I totally regret giving my daughter her father's last name (we are no longer together).

Yes it can be changed and another person mentioned parental responsibility and when we registered out daughters birth 3 years ago we received a leaflet that explained that all named fathers automatically have joint parental responsibilities...

good luck and best wishes
