we fish a man-made lake surrounded by about 100 luxury houses. it is connected to a nearby river by two canals. some people say the fish caught from it (largemouth bass, crappies and catfish) are safe to eat but some others say that, because of the chemicals that people use on the landscaping in people's backyards that can runoff into the lake, it is not safe. i've called the local county health department and they have no information. i don't see how it'd be any more harmful than eating fish from the farm ponds and sloughs here in the california central valley (which people do all the time).

I wouldn't chance it either.

The only way you will know for certain if your lake/pond has consumable fish is to send it off to the lab.

Certain lab's will do private test's on fish. You would need 2-4 fish in various species,( Bluegill, Bass, Catfish, Carp, Shad).

You would only want to send fillet's. Most harmful chemical's, mercury, lead, Etc, are located in the "belly" of the fish, ( a place you can cut-out when you go to fillet your fish!).

It probably won't cost more than $100-150 to get a study done. A good value when you see how expensive a fried fish dinner can be at a rest!

Good luck!

the particular state which you're fishing in will grant info on what lakes you mustn't consume the fish in, and which lakes it could be okay to consume them. And it is not lead it is the perpetrator. it incredibly is the mercury that the fish soak up of their bodies it is risky. In some lakes it incredibly is plenty greater greater then in different states. yet on the different hand , in case you basically consume fish sometimes, there must be no project. stable success on your trip. the dep. of fisheries must be those to touch.

I wouldnt because most residental place use the ponds as water runoff and drains usually run into them like the drains from the roads and sidewalks.
