Books are the best present for lots of reasons. You can't have too many, they come in every price range, they are fun, they're really wonderful to have, they are educational and beneficial, they promote interaction and closeness and there are so many different ones to choose from. The best thing to do is just go to your local bookstore and hang out in the kids section and browse for a little while. It won't take you long to find good books -- either ones that you remember enjoying a as child or ones that look good to you now or just some classic titles for that age could be "Pat The Bunny," "More, More, More Said the Baby," "Where the Wild Things Are," "Hungry Catepillar."

I agree that books are a great gift idea. My daughter loves Dr. Seuss. They have a nursery line of board books and some with textures and flaps. Also the books with sound are great.
Another good idea are those wooden puzzles with the big chunky pieces. My daughter has a bunch of those and she can out the pieces in all by herself. She has learned a lot about shapes with those.
Sidewalk chalk is also a great option. It is washable and a lot of fun to play with outside.

Anything that gets used up when they play with it so that the parent's can just toss it when they want is a good option. Crayons and paper for instance. Also, if you are close enough to the parents that you can get something messy, toddlers love fingerpaints and washable markers. You could add a cheap plastic table cloth and a smock to make clean up easier for the parents.

I'm not sure of the exact name but the pushing popper gizmo. We all had them as kids and they are timeless. You remember the blue handle attached to a clear chamber that has multiple balls in primary colors that kids push. I just bought one for my daughter at Wal-Mart for less than $10. They all love it.

Get them a gift card to Carters or Baby Gap or another baby clothing store. They will also have cute toys at Carters for the baby to play with.

They have these bath time crayons and color foam at Walmart. My niece and nephew LOVED these. They are big crayons that write on the bath tub! (the water washes away the markings) The foam is different colors and is tear free.
