I'm pretty sure neither of the two people above me know much about what your asking, they are just repeating fanboy rhetoric. PS3 has a hell of a slow start, but it looks to be in great shape in the coming year.
For you though your not to into gaming, and want it to be a multi-media and sometimes gaming system. Here are a couple points why I think the PS3 would be better for you.
- Blu-ray is selling better than the HD-DVD's, Blockbuster has seen a large trend of people renting and buying Blu-ray movies from them over the HD-Dvd format, and because of this is keeping the HD-DVD stock limited to a few stores, and is expanding the Blu-ray to I believe something like an extra 1,700 stores from its current 200 or so. This does not mean that Blu-ray won the format war, but it indicates the Blu-ray is the safer bet on who will do better for now at least.
- PS3 will be getting pretty much all the titles you would be interested for such as sports, GTA, and of course Madden. The only big game that you may be interested in Halo 3 is going to XBOX, but if you are interested in Halo 3 then I suggest buying Resistance: Fall of Man which is amazing.
- I am unsure what they are talking about not seeing the full game for GTA I would like them to point an article out to me, because I have not seen one. I have read articles with quotes from the director of GTA that XBox 360 is actually giving them some difficulties because they can't program something for the 360 because some 360's didnt come with a harddrive so they must program like there is no harddrive to not exclude users that bought the basic package.
I think those two points really should point you into making the PS3 your multi-media device of choice. I hope that helps.

i've read articles from the creators of the new GTA that's coming out, and they said to get the full experience you would have to play the xbox 360 version, it will have more to offer than the ps3 version. as for madden, correct me if im wrong, but ive read that it will have a higher frame rate (smoother action and graphics) than the ps3 as well.
if that was the lone argument i would go with xbox over ps3, however ur talking about movies alot.
if you plan on using it to watch movies more than gaming, then i guess the ps3 would be your choice. hd-dvd movies might not be selling as well as blu-ray but ive seen the quality of both, and you cant tell a difference in one over the other.
xbox has better online gaming support vs ps3 and more exclusive titles coming out in the next few months.
those are some things to consider before purchasing a console.

This is from an interview in gamesradar.com about GTA4;
+
"They're identical games," Simon continued. "We're not hardware makers, and we're not like a pawn between these companies, we try not to be as much as we can. We make great games for people to enjoy on whichever system they want.
"But I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose," Simon said.
+
He's refering to the downloadable content that will be available later on for the 360 version, but as he makes clear the games will be the same.
Of course, i could direct you to Criterion, developers of the Burnout series who keep enthusing about the Blu-ray disc and the advantages of it's space.

If you like to play fun games and play HD DVD's then get the xbox 360. The PS3 has the worst games and it isnt a very succesfful platform overall. The 360 has one of the best end of the year lineups. This includes GTA, Madden, Bioshock, Two Worlds, Jericho, Halo 3, and a multitude of others. Madden and GTA which you specified are exclusive to the 360.
