Don't they know that showing a lack of hospitality was the big sin of the Sodomites and was the reason why their God destroyed Sodom and the other less famous town of Gomorrah?

Those who are rude probably don't see it that way, unfortunately. They're so busy trying to "save" people they don't take the time to respect others' beliefs.

The same could be said of the athiests who respond cruelly to Christians.

And on the Sodom question: to those who think Sodom was destroyed because of homosexual activity, does that mean that you think it would have been OK if the locals had come around demanding that Lot give them a female guest to rape?

Why do atheists even bother with R&S other than to discourage people of faith?
Christians are human and imperfect and sometimes get emotional when The love of their lives (God) is slandered by people with nothing better to do.
I think that people who try to convince others that what they believe is wrong or foolish are just plain evil.
I'm not judgemental against atheists. I was once an Agnostic.
I came to believe in Jesus through a personal spiritual experience when given an answer to my own prayer as an unbeliever.
Christians should always let the spirit of Jesus lead them when they answer questions, but many do not.
They let their emotions answer for them, which is wrong.
But if someone were to attack someone YOU loved, how hospitable would you be to them? I think some Christians need to take a deep breath and pause before answering atheists questions, and remember who they are trying to represent.
God Bless.

The lack of hospitality isn't one-sided, though I agree Christians are under more specific orders.

The existence of extreme positions tends to polarise the moderate middle.
Individuals, even if not drawn by the confident propaganda of one wing, risk being appalled by the over-the-top claims of the other. A push-pull effect, emptying the centre.

(Very reminiscent of the origins of the Spanish Civil war!)

THEIR God.....not "there" God.

I try to be as nice as I can, while the atheists are mocking and ridiculing me for believing in God.

Yes, I know the story of Sodom and GOmorrah.

WHY do atheists ridicule Christians here on R & S? Why can they not let us worship in peace?

Don't they want to treat others the way they would like to be treated?

Surely they don't expect to mock us and curse us! That would be rude.

Have a good day. I will continue to try to be nice.
They can mock me and ridicule me all they like. If it makes them feel better, that is fine with me.

Hospitality isn't why those places were destroyed, the Atheists have come here to be hostile, insulting and provoking (Not all but most) which tends to make some inhospitable, they bring it on their own selves and have no one to blame but their own selves. Not all the Christians show a lack of hospitality either.

There are a couple of answers to your question.

1) Some atheists are particularly ignorant and obnoxious about their beliefs and want to shove them down people's throats. I personally call those people evangelical atheists. I avoid them whenever possible.

2) Some Christians confuse lecturing and preaching with being hospitable. They think that lecturing atheists about the scourge of hell is loving their neighbor as themselves. Personally, I think that loving your neighbor as yourself involves accepting people for who they are, and trying to treat them well.

Why do atheists show such a lack of hospitality to Christians here on R&S?

They don't care about Sodom and Gomorrah, since they claim they don't follow the OT, except for the 10 commandments & the talking serpent.

Stating what I believe (when asked I might remind you) is not blasphemy. I spend most of my time here responding to questions asked of atheists, then still get accused of pushing my ideas down Christian's throats. If you don't want to know, why do you ask?

atheist

Many of us Christians are quite kind to atheists. Ask some of my atheist friends (from here, in the R&S section) if that's true.
