Canon has some good digital cameras out that have many of the abilities of SLR without the price and with the user friendliness. It is their S series cameras. I think they are up to the S5 IS now. I have an S2 and it works great even though I plan on upgrading to at least the S3 sometime soon. I think that i payed about $250 for my camera about a year or so ago. It is only 3.2 MP but it has 10X Optical and 32X Digital zoom along with various other features. You can, of course, buy other lenses to go with it. It does have a manual focus on it and having the other lenses would increase the manual capabilities of it. I will endorse them very strongly. We have had pictures taken by an amateur with that camera and when we went to get them printed they did not want to print them because they thought they were professional pictures.

You should seriously consider saving a little longer and step up to a DSLR. If you're really getting into photography a "bridge" camera will not satisfy you. Interchangeable lenses are the way to go as you delve deeper into this fascinating hobby.
Check the review of the new Pentax K10D in the Aug. 2007 issue of Shutterbug magazine or at shutterbug.com. This latest Pentax has 10 megapixel, Image Stabilization in the body and accepts all Pentax (or Vivitar or Tamron, etc.) K-mount lenses. You'll have to use manual focus and metering .
Whatever camera you choose, check cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and get a protective cover for it.

Sounds like you are a point and shoot type photographer. If that's the case then the Nikon Cool pix 8800 is the camera you want. It' a full size digital camera with most of the features of the high prized Nikons without having to buy extra lenses. It has a 10x zoom lens (350mm), 8.31 MP, Image stabilization, remote control, all types of shooting modes including movie mode. You can even edit pictures inside the camera. I bought one two years ago and I am very happy with it. I have taken over 10,000 pictures with it with no problems. I am also a nature photographer.
The only problem is that they don't make theme anymore. You can still find theme on line with some vendors. Factory refurbished ones go for about $400.00.

CANON I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice. The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet. Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures. I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera. Good Luck my suggestion go to yahoo shopping digital cameras digital camera GUIDE be sure to check titles on the left side the guide should answer your questions

The S series camera is probably your next step (S2 IS or S5 IS). Loads of manual controls to play with.
Seriously, DSLR's are the way to go. The digitial rebel XT would be your best bet. The prices are always coming down. Save up. It will be worth it.
