childbirth in general is extremely scary. but it seems when its your first child, your friends and co-workers like to tell their horror stories or urban legends.

women give birth every day and live to tell about it. some of them even give birth with NO pain medication!

the safety of you and your baby are the doctor's main priority. comfort always comes second. talk to your doctor and they will help you decide what approach is best for you and the well being of your baby.

I didn't want an epidural either. I hoped to be able to do without anything, but that wasn't to be. I had a stressful last few days of pregnancy so was really tired before I even started labour. I did as well as I could, but needed help. I tried the gas, but ew. So I got pethadine at 5cm. That allowed me to lie down and rest, and by the time it wore off, I was rested enough to be able to keep going. I'll do the same again next time if I need to. Having pethadine at 5cm is a good time for it, because it's out of your system by the time your baby is born, you don't want them born drugged! Change your answering machine message to "Hi, I haven't have the baby yet, I'll let you know when I have. I'm very busy resting right now and no one other than the baby is going to interrupt that! I'll boast to you later!" Then put your feet up.
P.S. Pack barley sugars, you'll need them to keep your blood sugars up in first stage.

I'm not an expert. But here's what I've got

Epidural complete pain relief waist down even if you need a c-section

Spinal block-I don't know how this is administered, but the pain relief is similar to the epidural, BUT you have to stay laying flat for 24 hours afterward.

Staydol-They say it just makes you not care about the pain. I disagree. It made me drowsy, but the pain was just as bad.

There are other painkillers that they can shoot into your IV, but I wasn't happy with mine because I was drowsy but still in pain.

If they have to make an emergency c-section and you don't have a working epidural, they'll use general anesthesia and knock you out until baby's born and they've sewn you up.

That's all I know.

I had 3 epidurals and they were amazing! No pain, and recovered very well! With my third delivery I couldnt get an epidural right away because I was being induced so they gave me demerol through IV. That helped me relax because it honestly put me to sleep but it made me feel like I was on drugs and the epidural didn't make me feel like that. It really depends on how much pain you want to feel and if you dont mind having that drugged up feeling.

The symptoms really aren't that bad! It actually gives you time to relax. Honestly you need to be speaking to your OBGYN about this and he/she can give you the details, pros and cons of an epidural. Good luck hun! A child is certainly a wonderful gift from God!
