Every department selects their own. In some departments the officers can make their own selections.

My brother is a cop and he carries a Glock 9MM

Each department may use different types of weapons. Research is done by gunsmiths that work for the department and the generally evaluate which weapon would be best for their officers to use. For instance, smaller departments that do not typically have a lot of violent crime and do not have much money to spend, may opt for a smaller 9mm handgun. Larger departments that have more funding and have more violent offenders, may opt for a larger weapon such as a .357 or .40 cal. These larger cal. weapons are more effective in stopping a person when he/she is posing a serious threat to body injury and/or death. Smaller cal. bullets such as 9mm or .22, may not immediately stop a large individual who may be high on various drugs.

Almost all departments as well, use some sort of shot gun. This is also determined by the same the criteria mentioned above. One popular shotgun is the Remington Police model with a loaded stock. These are effective because it allows the officer to carry more than enough ammo if faced with a criminal with a semi-automatic or automatic weapon.

Hope this answers your questions.

Most agencies nowadays are opting for semi-automatics such as the Glock in 9mm or .40 caliber. Some use Sig Sauers, but those are pretty high dollar. There are quite a few using Berettas too, in 9mm. Revolvers seem to be on the way out, due to lower capacity of rounds and longer, trickier reloading procedures. The dependability of the newer semi- autos has brought them into favor. K ;o)

It depends on the situation. As a standard sidearm, the Glock and Beretta 9mms are popular. In addition, in many departments, each patrol car has a Mossberg or Remington pump-action 12-guage shotgun within reach of the officer. For SWAT applications, the Heckler & Kock MP5 submachinegun is very popular. U.S military rifles such as AR-15s, M-16s, and M-4 carbines are also common. Finally, SWAT teams also use bolt-action rifles for sniper work.

All departments vary. The thing that is the same is they all carry semi-automatics and usually between 9mm to .45 cal. I'm sure most do use hollow point, anti personnel rounds.
At the Sheriff's Office I work for, they are required to carry the Glock 22, which is the full sized .40 cal pistol and they carry gold dot hollow point ammo. The Columbus Police department is Ohio carry the Smith and Wesson stainless .45 cal. The U.S. military issues the Beretta 9mm.

The popular all around duty weapon is a Glock 17(9mm) or the Glock 22(.40cal). They are cheaper that most other pistols, simple to operate, care for and carry more rounds than most other competitor's pistols.

The other most common pistols you find in law enforcement are Smith and Wesson, Beretta, SigSauer and now Springfield Armory with the new XD pistols.

Depends on what city / county they're assigned to. Each city / county decides what will become the "standard issue" sidearm for their officers... but there are some "acceptable" firearms which may be used in leiu of these.

...for example, 9-mm Glocks might be standard issue ...however, lots of officers prefer the 10-mm or the .38-special revolver.

And then there are the "specialized" weapons which officers may be issued - 12-gauge remington, AR-15 rifle, taser, stun-gun, tear gas dispenser, etc.

There's no rule but I see that most are using pistols now (revolvers were more popular 30 years ago) and the Beretta M95 and the Glock 21 seem to be the most common.

9 mm was the rage for a while because of its low recoil and flat trajectory. Recently the trend has moved more towards the 40 cal because of its greater penetration (won't bounce off windshields or tires like a 9 mm can). It still has a nice flat trajectory but the projectile has greater mass and the round has a greater charge resulting in significantly greater impact energy.

Most police departments have switched their officers to semi-automatics. Naturally .40 Glocks are especially popular because they offer more punch than the traditional .38 caliber revolvers of old. They are quick to reload, easy maintenance, shooting accuracy, and dependable.
