Throughout my life I have occasionally (maybe twice a year) gotten charley horses. This past week i have woken up TWICE in the middle of the night with one. What on earth causes these? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? And how on earth is it that I have no control over it when its happening? they hurt so bad lol! Thanks in advance

It is lactic acid building up in your muscles. This is also what causes soreness the next day after you workout. A few things you can do is to massage it, eat fruit high in potassium (bananas, oranges, etc.) and if you need to take a painkiller try something like aleve, advil, or tylenol. Also stretching your muscles will help prevent them so they happen less often.

The pain should go away in like 20 mins, i normally massage my leg and keep my foot flexed so that the charlie horse wont come back.

Agreed, you need potassium. They are painful: I would twitch wrong and wake up in so much pain I want to scream!
