I just bought a house that has an old deck that has fallen into disrepair. I need to plan to work on it this fall or next spring to have something ready for prime grilling season next year and wondering if I should build a deck or patio if I am considering longterm (5-10 years out) to put in a screened in porch.

If you really plan to do the screened, it would be easier to do so with a deck structure rather than a patio unless you are thinking about a screened gazebo off the patio. We are building a screened porch off the breakfast area and adding the patio space to surround that so we will have both options. 5 to 10 years is a long time....you could be ready for a complete remodel by that time.

I would build a smaller deck up above to screen in later and at ground level have a larger concrete patio poured. They have many patterns to choose from and concrete is low maintenance.

Def go with a deck, they value more when re-selling.
