There is so much variety in these fields that it is difficult to give a generalised answer.

One thing worth noting, in common with a lot of areas, is that you will constantly need to update your skills.

I would expect, frustration, elation, tight deadlines and impossible budgets, but a great sense of achievement.

If you really want to know what it's like to work in engineering, then you need to read some dilbert cartoons, go to www.dilbert.com.

The author of the Dilbert cartoons (and books), Scott Adams was an engineer, and his work, although funny, is chilling close to the truth.

Putting cynicism aside, if you really want to work as an engineer then go for it. The world needs more engineers, without us the modern world would grind to a halt, and simply the satisfaction of knowing that you have done your bit to keep the world running smoothly makes it all worthwhile.

I think that david P has hit the nail on the head. The only thing that I would add is that if you go into maintenance engineering, you will be earning a lot less repairing equipment than the guys who are wrecking it!

One day, I tried to explain that to a bright 6 year old.
As he was doing his homework at the time, I told him how much I used math in my work.
He looked up at me with those bright eyes wide and Exclaimed " So you have to do math homework till you die???"
Thats engineering. - No matter the field, you'd better like math.
