I've had bad jaw pains when I smile or put my teeth together. My dentist/orthodontist said braces might fix it. Do I really need them? Even if my teeth are close to perfect? (by the way im 14)

The structure of your jaw is so important, too. It will dictate your facial structure and change your face if you don't correct these issues now.

If your orthodontist recommends it, it's probably a good idea to correct the issues and pains and structure now than suffer surgery later.

They might be close to perfect right now, but maybe change is imminent... i don't see any reason other than that why your dentist would suggest braces if your teeth appear to be fine. just get them. anybody i know that got braces in when they were about your age have the most beautiful straight clean teeth now. wouldn't that be something you'd like yourself?

An orthodontist would put braces on a dog if they could get away with it. They think everybody needs braces. You might have a condition called TMJ. See a regular physician and have it checked out.

Yay I reached the 4th level answering this question!

Yeah go for braces, I got them even though my teeth were almost straight due to a similar problem...

I say you should get them because it will stop the pain and your teeth could be trying to move into an imperfect pattern thus causing your pain which would mean you need the braces anyway. :D

Braces aren't just for straightening teeth - often they're for realigning jaws and bite patterns. You may have to wear other appliances (retainers, rubber bands, headgear, etc.) but in the end it will mean a healthier mouth.

Your teeth could be moving so they might give you the braces to fix the problem.

No. What you need is rubber bands. Ask your orthodontist if he could put bracets where the over bite is and then put rubber bands on. The rubber bands help overbite, so it's all good!

probably your back teeth or wisdom teeth probably didn't grow straight.
there's a lot of problems like that.

braces only hurt the first 3 days, so don't worry. :)
