I own a male cat who just turned a year old. My mom is going outta town and she owns a female cat whos now turning 12 years old. There both spayed/neutard. My cat has never had to share his home but hes not aggresive at all. How do i prepare both cats (they'll be alone for about 8 hours a day)

my moms cat does not use a litter box (indoor /outdoor cat) so when shes new to an area she goes in the bathroom (tub or toilet, yea toilet) would it be a good idea to keep her in the bathroom as a seperate room?

best thing you can do is bring something that has your cat's scent on it to your mom's cat and get something that has your mom's cat's scent on it and bring it to your cat put it down by the food bowl and each cat will get to learn eachothers scent in the context of something good (being fed)
for the first few days till you are sure how they will react to eachother when you are away put them in seperate rooms or in seprate large dog crates with a litter box, water and toys.

Has your cat been socialized at all? If not introduce them slowly and keep them in a separate room for a couple of days and whatever you do don't fuss over the other cat more than your own. I often used a double knotted string under the door it would let them play without being face to face right away and they would make friend easier that way. It usually takes a few days, but it's worth it. So get a long string and make to knotted balls on each end and put it under the door they will play and get used to each others scent that way and after awhile you'll know when to open the door. Make sure that their food is in a separate area and definately separate litter boxes. Good luck you may be lucky and they might like each other right away.

Take turns letting one then the other have the run of the house while the other one is behind a closed door for a few days. This will start to get them used to each others' scents before introducing them "live". Then you just have to let them have at each other. There really is no good way of predicting how they'll respond unless you've seen them both of them interact with other cats. If they are aggressive, especially the cat you have now, then give them 4-6 weeks to see if they settle in. Many cats go through this rough period when they are introduced and end up becoming best buds before long. Best of luck!

If possible get a blanket or some beding that the other cat has slept on. You cat will get the scent of the new cat and wont be so stressed to share his home.If your stilled worried keep the new cat in a separate room while your gone, the let them get together while you are home. You will then be able to see how they interact while you are there and be able to stop any problems or fights they may have.Good luck.

If I were you I would take some "bedding" (blanket, pillow or whatever the cats lay on a lot,) from each household and exchange them, so both will become more familiar with each others scent and then the next day introduce them, while each of you holds the other in their lap...that way if one begins to get aggressive, they can be easily removed...Most domestic felines will adjust well to each other but you may need to keep the "intruder" in a separate section of the house for a few days (where they can see or at least smell and hear each other, maybe sharing a toy under the door) so they can get used to each other.

Keep your mothers cat separated from your cat. She probably won't want anything to do with your cat anyways because of the age difference. If, after a couple days they seem interested in each other (playing under the door, sniffing, etc.), try letting them meet & see how it goes.

Optimally it is better to care for felines in their own environment, with that being said, that may not work for you.
Bring your moms cat to your home in her kennel preferrably on your days off. Put her in a room by herself with her food and litter.
Let your cat still have the house to roam.
With your guidance and with the door open, you can let your cat in the room with your moms cat still in her kennel. Just so that she feels secure and they can sniff each other.
You should do this for a couple of days, and gradually let her out with your cat but observe them closely.
If you are really concerned after that, and they don't get along as well as you had expected. Then leave her in a bedroom (not in the kennel), with her food/water and litter and close the door.
Then when you get home after work, let her out and you can then observe their behaviour from then on.
Hopefully this helps. All the best, CC.

cats unlike us humans will tolerate each other even if they don't like each other, keep your moms cat in the bedroom for a day or two and let your cat still roam the house, this way they can still smell or play with each other under the door and get to know each other, by the third day let the cat start roaming the house, one of them will dominate over the other,

I don't know how you'll prepare them, but i can tell you to be prepared for an increase in the odour of cat urine about your house... a new cat being present is going to start a territory battle between them if they don't know each other, which involves spraying of urine all over the place.

well sure the cats will fight if your cat never shared a home before he wont like the fact that he has to share the house. keep them together has long has they don't draw any blood if they start to draw blood its better to leave them separated. but don't be scared of 2 cats fighting it would just be better if you leave them fight has long has there no blood because they may scratch you. when your not home maybe leave them in separated rooms
