what do you think?

Yes and no. First there are arguments about males and females. There are homosexual females that protest that if there was a draft females should be drafted as well. It would cause a riot in the united states if that ever occurred because of our amendments and freedoms. So i think it is a bad idea. And also warfare has changed so much in the last 50 years. For example the technology advantages today compared to Vietnam. Then thousands died, but then if we had the technology we did today the numbers would be a lot slimmer.

My feelings are that the draft should never been done away with. A country is only as strong as its armies. and a lot of people signing up for the military are doing so to get out of going to jail. The military teaches discipline and respect which not many young folks know about now days.

NO!!! I have been in the Marine Corps for 12 years and would not want to have to go to combat with people who do not want to be in the military. You would have discipline problems, a lot more drug use, and over all just more problems than you could deal with. The military is finding it more difficult to recruit people, but it still hitting its goals. There are enough people volunteering for military service so I see no need for a draft.

National Service is a good idea. As an alternative to one of the Military services, many countries have offered Peace Corps, VISTA, police, fire dept, ambulance and hospital work, and other government agencies.

The point is that everyone should contribute, and the social skills and work ethics that you lean in the military or public service give 18 to 20 year olds a valuable head start.

I do not support sending draftees to fight overseas unless they volunteer. I believe the constitution provided conscription only to defend US territory against foreign invaders and we need professionals for overseas operations, not slackers who do not want to be there.

Draft? Not a good idea. Most Americans would not accept it. There would be protests. Also, considering that Bush started the war in Iraq and that it has gone badly, a draft would represent a failure of this war to be won anytime soon.

a non biased military draft is a good idea. with all sexes, social class mind you. a draft in Iraq and Iran will cause the senate to wake up and get us out of there, when their little Tommy and little Daisy at home go off to war.

but you see, in that case, the drafted personnel will not go to the lines of battle.

in the instance that draft personnel are taken to the lines, and actually fighting, this is just as if the government is trading a human life for a victory. i.e: dehumanization and the act of human ownership.

No, it's not a good idea; however, it may be the only way to keep the powers that be in check. If the draft had been in place when the shrub wanted to start this war, either it would have never begun or it would have been over for more than three years now.

The draft is something done in totalitarian nations, this country is founded on the idea of freedom, and the draft is an appalling dismantling of human rights. I could only see the draft coming back now, because of the war in Iraq and George Bush's foreign policy. Military recruiting is down, and the Army failed to meet its recruitment quota 2 months in a row this summer. In regards to foreign policy, as we anger the world with our senseless imperialism, our number of allies dwindles, leaving us fewer nations to rely on for coalition aid. And Bush has made many enemies, especially among Iran and Russia. I am only 15 years old, but I have a strong feeling that I will be the one drafted to fight Bush's war, long after he (thankfully) leaves office.

The lack of numbers in an all-volunteer military may necessitate the draft. It is a sign of desperation - if it does come back - that the armchair "warriors" in the executive and legislative branches of federal government have failed this nation and - sadly - its young people.

not at all.

wars are fought differently these days. the military needs people who WANT to be there, and have the skills necessary to fight the war. imagine how uneffective the military would be if it had a lot of soldiers who did not want to be there, or even know how to perform the skills nedded to fight?

the iraq war is unpopular enough as it is, and it would only get even more unpopular if the re enstate the draft.

a political expert on my local tv station last year said it is very unlikely that the bill to introduce it would even make it to the senate floor.
