As stated, it's probably not dirt so much as it's just dead skin and sebum from your own body. Every time you idly scratch your head or arm, the dead skin collects under your nails. It looks dark like dirt because its concentrated under nails, instead of spread out over your whole head/body. Wash more frequently (but not more than once daily), moisturize your skin and use a nail brush to clean under your nails. Keeping your nails short will also reduce how much collects. Fingernails shorter than 3 mm long seem to collect the least amount of microbes (and equally, any other dirt).

Well, you can't really prevent dirt from getting under your nails... Unless you cut your nails back really short. Either wash your hands more often or do what I do... Keep a nail clipper on your key chain and use the little part that extends out to clean under your nails.. Sometimes even the surfaces we think are clean really aren't, but perhaps the dirt your seeing while typing actually got under there before hand... Its hard to tell.

You can't prevent it. You can clean your finger nails though or have a lot of showers (the shampoo for my hair gets under my nails and cleans them when I am scrubbing my hair).

Use computer key wipes... surprising how much dead skin and sebum builds up over a period of frequent use.
