Excellent question. I was just reading about this very topic in a book called "Essential Spirituality" by Roger Walsh. If the subject interests you, I highly recommend the book - it's a great read.

To answer your question I think we would be surprised to know how many people know how to effectively deal with their emotions. I completely agree that our emotions tie into every aspect of our lives - physically and mentally. I am learning to not let my emotions become my entire motivation in life by learning to grow spiritualy and have more pure motivations. It is a very difficult transformation.

You can follow your emotions but you still have common sense and free will. Emotions, like a "gut feeling" is just a suggestion really. Sometimes you know that a person is bad news with first impression. Like most things you have to have the intelligence to separate real from fantasy.

I'd say that quite a few people know how to deal with their emotions, espcially as they get older and learn more. Granted this does not apply to everybody as some still have problems.

By thinking analytically and making choices based on known facts rather than feelings.

Some people need to be driven by emotions. I am a writer and I swear when I am upset everything I write is better. I don't know why, but it is.
There is no reason why you can't have it both ways. I am emotional and logical.

I find that it's best to just stuff all of that anger and sadness into a deep little ball in the pit of your stomach. Stuff it deep, DEEP down there, and never, ever let it out. If it hurts a little, you're doing it right. Viola! Problem solved!

I prefer the higher emotions; love, joy, gratitude, etc..
Those who hang out with, and drag around, the lower ones need to learn how to release them and get on with life.

WHAT?!? MY EMOTIONS?!?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY EMOTIONS?!?! THEY DON'T MOTIVATE ME!!!!! MY EMOTIONS ARE ALWAYS UNDER CONTROL!!!! Only kidding...I don't believe that we would be human if we could control or manipulate our emotions. Emotions are what brings us character and strength.
