Many people assume that Muslim women are oppressed because they wear coverings over their hair. so do Orthodox Jewish women, but I've never heard THEM called "oppressed". Why do you think that is?

No. Why should they when women are considered spiritually SUPERIOR to men in Judaism whereas in Islam they are considered inferior and treated as minors.

On top of that- if a woman chooses NOT to cover her hair- their is no legal sanction or penalty, nor was there even in the time sof the temple, it is merely considered immodest. Additionally, a woman has many rights in Judaism- she calls the shots in the house. Its up to her when sex happens- the husband is obligated to comply to her requests- not the other way round. If the husband abuses her- she can demand a divorce and on and on... So the reason they are not considered opressed is because they are NOT! Covering their hair is THEIR CHOICE.

Note: It is a tiny sect of Jews that shave their head- it is actually frowned upon and seen as extremist by the vast majority of Orthodox Jews. Where it comes from is a minority opinion held by some Rabbis that hair acts as a barrier when immersing in a mikveh and thus all hair should be removed. the majority opinion is that hair is part of the body and skin and does NOT constitute a barrier that needs to be removed. The majority opinon is probably followed by 99% of Jews- but you always get people that want to go their own way...

You and I both know why norcal.

Silly people.

gratvol.....the majority of Muslim women do not wear the veil. Many scholars in Islam do not consider the veil (face covering) mandatory.

Mark S...I am Muslim and not only do I not 'feel' oppressed I am not oppressed. AND by my own choice I actually wear the veil not just the head covering.

jimmie...Muslim women can not be beaten at all let alone in the street. Any punishment for disobeying the law (like speeding, murder etc) is to be carried out by a proper court. Just because you saw one video (the same ONE video we all saw) of some jerk in Afghanistan smacking a woman's feet doesn't mean it is acceptable or part of Islam.

Just me.....the punishment for adulterers is the same, male or female. Women are not kept in any part of this world. People like you seem to think that some women don't have brains, free will, strong wills! and desires in their lives. We Muslim women have the same as any other woman on this planet and act on those. We also have our rights in Islam. Rights that were granted to us 1400 years before any other religion or nation did so.

No they are not. I don't see how being modest equals oppression, even the men are modest. If anything the women have the upper hand in Judaism.

One good movie showing this is "Ushpizin" shows how an Orthodox marriage is

I'm not Orthodox myself, but I can assure you they do not feel oppressed. Just as non-Jews seem to believe that following the commandments is a burden, some feel that the role of an Orthodox woman is a burden.

Orthodox Jews feel that everything they do for God is a privilege and a joy. I have begun to experience some of that myself as I try to become kosher and follow the commandments.

Many people assume that Muslim women are oppressed not because they cover their hair, but Muslim women are oppressed because they can be beaten in the streets by strangers.

Because Islam is a religion of oppression.

If Islam was the only choice in the world, I'd rather go to Hell, than agree with a religion that treats people this way. My religion says God loves everyone. Islam says I'm going to Hell for believing my religion. There's no possible way that Islam is correct.

Here's a graphic image of a Muslim woman being buried so that she can be stoned to death -- probably accused of adultery.

But let's not be specific, here's a whole website dedicated to Islam's oppression of women.. . .

http://www.islam-watch.org/index.html

There are a lot of links here, as well as very graphic images of women being oppressed in the name of Islam.

That is so true. Nobody ever says anything about that. Of course, maybe if I was an Orthodox Jew I might feel differently. Maybe ppl would treat me differently. Thank you for the reminder though. :D

I'm an Orthodox woman. I'm not oppressed. Q.E.D.

That's because Orthodox Jewish women don't *feel* oppressed. They wear a wig or hair covering once they're married as a sign of modesty.

some orthodox jewish women shave their hair AND cover their head. at least we muslim ladies get to keep our hair. :)

i think we should respect any lady's choice to cover, whether she's a jew, a muslim, or a christian nun.

No. In Judaism married women choose to cover their heads for modesty etc. HOWEVER, legally the woman has just as many rights as the man. In Islam it does not appear to be that way (women are stoned for adultery but what about the men etc). Women have found their place in Judaism but in Islam it appears women are "kept" in their place. It is not a double standard. It is two different views of women in a religion. Women are revered in Judaism. Women seem to be scorned in Islam.
