If you have a place to stay on Long Island, stay there. It's less crowded and noisy. If you don't have a place to stay on Long Island, then stay in Queens, it's less expensive.

Stay in Queens. You can still take the subways or buses there. Long Island is too far; you'll need to take the Long Island Rail Road.

well, if you can't actually stay in manhattan then i'd stay in queens.
Queens is much easier since you can use the subway to get in to manhattan. If you stayed on LI you'd have to use the LIRR which has a set schedule and is more expensive than a subway ride.
When finding a place to stay in quees make sure it's near a subway stop. Astoria is a good area of queens and is about 15min from midtown. Although, im not sure about any hotels there

since your not from new york and likly used to a safer, less crowded environment, i'd suggest long isl if you want that
.............................
if you want to be closer to the city i would suggest queens, LI's a longer commute
