I not a christian, but I was raised all my life in the fellowship.
I feel that there is a difference between a belief, or faith, and a religion.
To me, beliefs are what born-again Christians live by and practice in ALL their affairs to the fullest of their spiritual maturity, (whatever level of maturity that may be for themselves).
Religion is man-made, and as such, was created by and run by self-will, which is fallible (aka BEING HUMAN) and can at times be incredibly strong or weak as the case demands.
so, I guess, depending on what religion a person is a member of, it is possible that there is always an element or two that one might be ashamed of.
Personally for me, being a struggling-to-believe person, I do not count myself as being born-again, even I know the age-old story, but I am ashamed of what so many people have done throughout the centuries "in the name of God" which has been clearly against Jesus' teachings.
I cannot answer for any other religion, because I am not a part of any other religion like Buddhism or voodoo, or catholic, or Muslim, etc.

I'm not ashamed of my religion,, but I am of the people who use it the wrong way,, there are Good Christians and then you have those that are doing things in the name of religion that is wrong,, The only thing that gives me comfort is knowing that they will pay for their sins.. It's just that for the non-believers who see these things done or said by those that are using religion in the wrong way won't take the time to realize that there are bad people who call them self religious.

What is in the bible that you will make fun of me for?
If someone mentions something in the old testament, I let it go because those are Jewish beliefs and Christians don't have to follow them(long story why...google "new covenant, Jesus" if you care).
If they say something in the New Testament, then hopefully I will be able to tell them why they're wrong. I don't think there is anything in the bible that people can make fun of besides saying God is a "giant, non-existent, invisible sky pixie"
And also, just so you know, Jesus said to rejoice when someone persecuted us (Matthew 5:10)

Ashamed of my religion - NEVER!!!
I found this on the net a while back that works for me...
I am a part of the "The Fellowship of the Unashamed". I have the Holy Spirit Power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won't look back, let up, slow down, back away or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, mundane talking, chintzy giving and dwarfed goals!
I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits or popularity. I don't have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded or rewarded. I now live by presence, lean by faith, love by patience, lift by prayer and labor by power.
My pace is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my Guide reliable, my mission clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, deterred, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity or meander in the maze of mediocrity.
I won't give up, back up, let up or shut up until I've preached up, prayed up, paid up, stored up and stayed up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I must go until He returns, give until I drop, preach until all know and work until He comes.
And when He comes to get His own, He will have no problem recognizing me. My colors will be clear.

All the time. My own religion boycotted Disney (a very hypocritical stance) and many (not all) still deny women in their pulpits preaching. My religion embarrases me regularly and puts me in a position of having to defend myself. I'm a southern baptist but am in no way a fundamentalist. I openly support women in minstry among other things. Baptists are supposed to follow a doctrine of "priesthood of the believer". In other words, the Holy Spirit can help me glean truth out of the Bible without some national body deciding for me. So, I'm a Christian first (my faith not my religion) and a southern baptist second.

sure, each and every in some situations I draw back to confirm countless the responses from people who declare to be Christians (of direction, some must be trolls, yet regrettably, i be attentive to first-hand that a number of those may be real as properly). I understand, too, that a Christian who's extra "open" than i'm ought to each now and then experience an analogous way approximately my solutions. So I must be tolerant of others, i assume! EDIT: CH, i in my opinion savor your enter! Your answer is the type i could be proud to confirm coming from a Christian (LOL). Seriousy, your attitude is encouraging.

I could never be ashamed of my Lord. I am at times embarrassed by things churches do and I am often troubled by the actions of individual Christians but never by my Lord.

When I was younger and in school I was. But now that I'm older (50) I'm not. I was not laughed at in school.but kids were always asking why-how come and when your young it's hard to explain especially when you hadn't yet became a believer yourself. Now when people make snide remarks, I overlook them. If I am asked why or how come now-I tell why I choose to live the way I do. But it was hard when growing up.

I have never been ashamed to be a follower of Christ. I have been ashamed of my own actions when I fail to follow the teachings of Christ and I have certainly been dismayed by actions of other people that claim to share my beliefs and then behave in a manner that is inconsistent with those beliefs, but I'm not responsible for their actions so shame doesn't enter in to it.
